Starbucks has unveiled an innovative beta feature within its app, powered by ChatGPT, that allows customers to receive personalised drink recommendations. Launched on 15 April, this new function aims to enhance the customer experience by enabling users to engage in conversational prompts or upload images to express their beverage preferences.

To access this feature, Starbucks app users simply need to open ChatGPT, enable the Starbucks option in the app directory, and begin interacting with the chatbot by mentioning @starbucks. The responses can be tailored based on user input, whether it’s a textual query or a mood-based photo upload. For example, someone might prompt, “@Starbucks, I want something bright to start my morning,” or request a drink that aligns with their current mood by sharing an image related to their outfit or the weather.

Upon entering a prompt, customers receive a curated list of drink options that fit their requests. Early testers of the feature provided feedback that they were impressed with the variety of suggestions. One user sought a “sweet drink with coconut to brighten my morning” and was given six enticing choices, including the Iced Ube Coconut Macchiato and the Iced Toasted Coconut Latte, among others. Notably, each suggestion came with descriptions, highlighting the Iced Mango Dream Energy Drink as “most energising” and the Iced Pink Drink as a “lighter and refreshing” alternative.
The interface allows users to select their preferred drink from the suggested list, further customise it according to their taste, and designate their local Starbucks location before completing the order directly within the app. Starbucks claims that this new feature is designed to provide a more intuitive and enjoyable way for customers to discover new beverages.
This rollout is part of a broader strategy at Starbucks to enhance customer engagement. In addition to the ChatGPT feature, the company recently introduced a revamped rewards programme comprising three tiers: Green, Gold, and Reserve. The Green tier is the entry level, while Gold members achieve status after accumulating 500 stars and Reserve members reach their level after earning 2,500 stars within a calendar year. Each tier comes with distinct benefits, such as birthday treats for Green members and varying redemption options for Gold and Reserve members.
With these updates, Starbucks not only seeks to enhance its technological offerings but also aims to foster a sense of personalised service amid a competitive coffee market. The feedback so far indicates that customers value the opportunity to explore new drink possibilities in a more interactive and engaging manner, which could boost customer loyalty.
Furthermore, the integration of AI technology such as ChatGPT is indicative of a growing trend within the retail sector to leverage digital tools for improved customer interaction. This move may signal a shift in how consumers engage with brands, as companies increasingly adopt artificial intelligence to create immersive and tailored experiences.
As Starbucks continues to innovate, both in terms of technology and customer programmes, it appears poised to appeal to a wider range of customers, from casual coffee drinkers to loyal fans of the brand. With such unique features, Starbucks aims not only to meet the expectations of its clientele but also to set itself apart in a saturated market where convenience and personalised service are becoming increasingly essential to success.
In the coming months, the coffee giant will likely monitor user engagement with the ChatGPT feature to refine and enhance its offerings further. As customers embrace this new way to discover drinks, Starbucks will undoubtedly continue finding ways to adapt and improve its customer experience, integrating technology whilst maintaining its commitment to quality and service.
