Mother Said Her Toddler Died Choking. An Autopsy Found No Food in His Airway

A Kansas mother has been charged with multiple serious offences following the tragic death of her 15-month-old son, Matthew Jon Whitton. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has formally accused Shanna Kay Whitton of first-degree felony murder among other charges in connection with the child’s untimely demise.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on 25 August 2025, when emergency services responded to a distress call from the Mimosa Arms Apartments in Clearwater. Paramedics discovered young Matthew unconscious, reportedly having choked on food. Unfortunately, despite extensive medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Investigators from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office subsequently grew suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Matthew’s death. Sheriff Jeff Easter revealed that they did not find the mother’s account of the choking incident to be credible. An autopsy report revealed that Matthew had died from “complications of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy caused by an intentionally inflicted asphyxia event,” leading authorities to classify the child’s death as a homicide.

Further analysis from the medical examiner showed no traces of food located in Matthew’s airway, suggesting that the choking narrative presented by Whitton may not have been accurate. This finding has raised significant concerns about the treatment of the child prior to his death.

Additionally, investigators had already scrutinised Shanna Whitton’s actions prior to Matthew’s death. On 26 July, a fire was reported within the family’s apartment, specifically in Matthew’s bedroom while he was present. Fire investigators determined that the fire had been deliberately set, prompting further scrutiny into the household’s situation.

Whitton has been charged not only with first-degree felony murder but also with child abuse, aggravated child endangerment, and aggravated arson. Following her initial arrest in October 2025 over the arson allegations, she has remained in custody. Her bail has been set at $500,000.

Sheriff Easter emphasised the methodical nature of the investigation, stating that detectives are dedicated to ensuring every detail is examined carefully. “These investigations take time because we have a responsibility to get them right,” he remarked, underscoring the need to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves.

As the case progresses, many in the community are left grappling with the tragic loss of a young life and the serious allegations facing his mother. Authorities have assured the public that they are working diligently to uncover the truth behind these devastating events.
