Josh Liljenquist, a Minnesota influencer renowned for his charitable acts towards the homeless, has found himself at the centre of controversy after being banned from St. Paul parks for a duration of 180 days. The St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation issued the ban, citing concerns over his behaviour while filming content in the parks.

In a letter addressed to Liljenquist on 6 April, signed by the director of the Parks and Recreation department, Andy Rodriguez, officials accused him of “routinely” disrupting the peace at Pig’s Eye Park. The letter alleges that Liljenquist has been “harassing, recording, and profiting from vulnerable adults” residing in the area without their consent. Furthermore, it mentioned that the department had documentation indicating Liljenquist intended to host an “unlicensed event” at the park, which raised additional concerns.
The letter detailed a specific incident, indicating that Liljenquist had planned an event on 11 April 2026 without proper authorisation from city officials. He was warned that failure to comply with the ban could result in misdemeanor charges. The directive takes effect immediately, prohibiting Liljenquist from entering any St. Paul Parks and Recreation property until 3 October 2026.
Liljenquist, who boasts over 17 million followers on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, expressed his bewilderment over the accusations to PEOPLE. He firmly denied the claims of harassment and insisted that he would never record anyone without their permission. His agent, Warren, echoed these sentiments, stating their confusion regarding the accusations and stressing that Liljenquist had no knowledge of any planned event.
Furthermore, Liljenquist clarified that he was not even in Minnesota during the purported date of the unlicensed event. He mentioned being on a family trip to Florida from 8 April to 15 April, which he believes undermines claims suggesting he would organise an event he could not attend.
Despite the negative attention, Liljenquist’s primary objective has always been to assist those in need in a genuine way. He often films himself purchasing food, donating money, and raising funds for the homeless, turning social media into a platform for good. He describes his time in Pig’s Eye Park as an opportunity to create positive interactions, often finding solace in his car, which he regards as a haven where individuals can approach him.
Warren defended Liljenquist against the notion that he exploits vulnerable individuals for profit. He emphasised that the essence of Liljenquist’s content was to help others, rather than commercialise their struggles. According to Warren, the influencer’s charitable acts stem from a desire to uplift people rather than to benefit financially from their hardships.
Liljenquist has been active in raising awareness about various causes, frequently spotlighting individuals in dire circumstances on his social media channels. One notable instance involved presenting a $500,000 cheque to a woman whose son is battling Lafora disease, a rare and severe neurological disorder. This instance is just one example of the significant impact Liljenquist aims to achieve through his online presence.
In light of the ban, Liljenquist has expressed a desire to return to the parks and continue his charitable endeavours. He has sought an appeal hearing to contest the restrictions placed upon him, believing that his intentions are purely altruistic.
The situation has ignited a debate about the role of influencers in charitable activities, raising questions regarding the ethical implications of recording the experiences of vulnerable populations for public consumption. As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will affect Liljenquist’s future engagements and his ability to continue his work in the community.
As of now, the St. Paul Department of Parks and Recreation has remained tight-lipped beyond confirming the legitimacy of the ban, leaving many to ponder the boundaries between social media influence and community respect. With a dedicated following, Liljenquist continues to advocate for the causes he believes in, while navigating the challenges posed by this recent setback.
