26 ICU and Emergency Room Patients Forced to Evacuate Hospital as Fire Ignites in Electrical Room

A significant emergency unfolded at Boston Medical Center – Brighton in the early hours of April 15 when a fire erupted in the hospital’s electrical room, leading to a power outage and necessitating the evacuation of a number of patients. Emergency services were alerted to the situation shortly after 1:30 a.m., and firefighters quickly sprang into action to manage a challenging and urgent rescue operation.

Firefighters successfully evacuated a total of 26 patients from the facility, the majority of whom were situated in the intensive care unit (ICU). According to reports from local media, including CBS Boston and WHDH, the evacuation primarily focused on transferring 24 patients from the ICU and two from the emergency room due to the hazardous conditions caused by the fire.

Once the flames were under control and the heavy smoke that had enveloped the hospital cleared, Boston Fire Department (BFD) personnel, along with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff and hospital workers, initiated the transfer of patients. The urgency of the situation was highlighted by the use of specialised equipment, with firefighters using baskets to carry some patients down the stairs to awaiting ambulances.

The gravity of the situation was underscored by the condition of many of the evacuated patients, who required advanced care and life support. Sharon Efstathiou, Deputy Superintendent of Boston EMS, noted that most of the patients rescued were in a precarious state, further complicating evacuation efforts.

Patrick Ellis, Chief of Operations for the Boston Fire Department, remarked on the intricate challenges presented during the rescue. He explained that many patients were reliant on medical equipment such as IVs and monitors, making swift movements difficult. He characterised the operation as a “very coordinated effort,” emphasising that patient safety was the top priority throughout the operation.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among patients or staff, and family members of those evacuated were promptly informed of the situation. The hospital’s spokesperson has yet to provide a comment regarding the incident.

As a measure following the fire, Boston Medical Center implemented the use of generator power to sustain operations. Repairs to the damaged electrical infrastructure are expected to be extensive. Chief Ellis indicated that restoring the main electrical supply, which was compromised in the fire, will not be a quick process and that repairs might extend over the coming weeks.

The Boston Fire Department has confirmed that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Further details regarding the circumstances that led to the ignition of the blaze will be pursued to ensure safety and accountability.
