On the morning of February 7, 2017, shortly before dawn, Schipper broke into the Van Oostens’ home armed with a firearm. He forced the couple, both in their sixties, into the trunk of his car and drove them approximately 20 miles to a secluded property he owned in Geneseo, Illinois. Here, the couple was imprisoned in a soundproof room, monitored by a sophisticated surveillance system. Schipper used a taser on them to maintain control, masking his identity with a ski mask and altering his voice when he spoke.
The following day, Schipper ordered Connie to procure a $350,000 cashier’s check at a local bank, threatening to kill her husband if she failed to comply. In a moment of courage, Connie managed to slip a note to a bank teller that detailed their dire situation. This act prompted immediate police action, leading to an investigation into the kidnapping.
Law enforcement quickly uncovered crucial evidence linking Schipper to the case, including the connection between the bank and his business. As of now, Chad Schipper remains incarcerated at Menard Correctional Center in Chester, Illinois, with a projected parole date in January 2068.
