The director insisted that D’Onofrio not discuss the character or his performance throughout the filming process. This was a first for D’Onofrio, who had never encountered such a directive. The shop employee assisted him in creating custom knee braces and paint sticks, allowing D’Onofrio to explore the movement and posture of a creature he envisioned as a “20-foot alien” constrained within a human form. He practised in his braces at home, striving to perfect the physicality that would define Edgar the Bug.

When D’Onofrio finally arrived on set, he was filled with uncertainty. His first scene, staged in a barn, was a pivotal moment that he felt could determine his fate. Due to the agreement with Sonnenfeld, there was no opportunity for D’Onofrio to gauge the director’s expectations beforehand, adding to his anxiety. As he embarked on his performance—a monologue made of bizarre lines—Sonnenfeld called for a halt just mid-way through.

The first assistant director intervened, instructing the rest of the cast to clear the set but requesting that D’Onofrio remain.
