The search for Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old American woman who went missing during a dinghy excursion in the Bahamas, has taken a new turn following the release of her husband, Brian Hooker. Brian, aged 59, was taken into custody on 8 April but was released five days later without charges, as confirmed by the Royal Bahamas Police.
The couple had embarked on their trip on the evening of 4 April, departing from Hope Town and heading towards Elbow Cay. According to police reports, Lynette reportedly fell overboard, along with the keys to their boat. Brian, who returned to shore the next morning to alert authorities, stated that “strong currents carried [Lynette] away” and that he lost sight of her shortly thereafter.
On 13 April, following discussions with the Department of Public Prosecutions, officials decided not to file charges against Brian at this time, stating that the investigation remains ongoing. Despite his release, he remains a person of interest in the case. Detective Inspector K. Campbell of the Royal Bahamas Police outlined that the investigation will continue to seek further information.
Brian’s attorney, Terrel A. Butler, expressed frustration at the extensive time taken to reach their decision, noting that his client “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing” and has been fully cooperating with the investigation. Butler defended Brian’s actions on the fateful night, emphasising that he is the sole witness to the events that transpired.
Concerns have been raised by Lynette’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, regarding the couple’s relationship. Aylesworth has described it as volatile and has called for a thorough inquiry into her mother’s disappearance. In light of this, Butler dismissed these allegations, stating that they do not clarify the circumstances of Lynette’s disappearance or suggest any culpability on Brian’s part.
Local reports indicate that alcohol may have played a role in the incident, as suggested by Richard Cook, a team leader with the Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue. Although he noted that there was no suspicion of foul play at that time, it added another layer of complexity to the investigation.
Before his arrest, Brian made a heartfelt post on social media describing the chaotic conditions they faced on the night of Lynette’s disappearance. He detailed the “unpredictable seas and high winds”, asserting that they had made desperate attempts to locate her but were hindered by the elements. “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart,” he wrote.
