A couple has filed lawsuits against American Airlines and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) following an incident in April 2024, which they allege involved “discriminatory and outrageous conduct” by the airline and “unlawful detention” by airport police.

Peter and Dr. Mary Jane Williams assert they were denied boarding due to a dispute regarding the size of a carry-on bag when they attempted to travel from Evansville, Indiana, to Phoenix, Arizona, with a layover in Texas. Their disputes culminated in two civil complaints submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on April 8. One complaint is directed at American Airlines, while the other names DFW Airport, its public safety department, and four officers involved in the incident.
On April 14, the couple alleges that during the initial leg of their flight, Dr. Mary Jane Williams successfully boarded the aircraft with her luggage without issue. However, problems arose at DFW when an airline employee reportedly informed her that one of her bags exceeded the allowed size for carry-on items. The couple’s complaint indicates that instead of following standard customer service protocols, American Airlines staff called the DFW Airport Police to the gate.
The complaints suggest that American Airlines employees made “false or misleading statements” regarding the situation to justify their actions, resulting in an escalation that was unwarranted. According to the Williamses, when officers arrived, Peter Williams explained his urgency to return home to his family in Phoenix, but this did not calm the situation.
The situation reportedly deteriorated further when Dr. Williams was escorted off the jetway. Peter alleges that as he walked back towards the aircraft, he was forcefully tackled to the ground by officers, restrained, and subjected to the deployment of a taser. The couple claims the use of a taser was unnecessary and unsupported, as indicated by comments made by one of the responding officers.
Sustaining multiple physical injuries during the altercation, Peter Williams later faced arrest and was charged with criminal offences in Tarrant County. However, the couple contends that these charges were ultimately dismissed.
The complaint lodged against American Airlines also includes allegations that the airline falsely claimed to conduct an investigation into the incident. Instead of addressing the matter appropriately, they reportedly issued a permanent ban on the couple from flying with the airline, which they characterise as retaliatory and indicative of bad faith on the part of American Airlines.
In their complaints, the Williamses accuse American Airlines of eight different counts, including negligence, negligent training, and defamation. They are seeking a jury trial and requesting damages for various losses, including medical expenses, lost wages, and reputational harm.
Further accusations against DFW Airport and police officers involve allegations of excessive force, false arrest, unlawful detention, and assault.
The situation continues to unfold, prompting media inquiries to the parties involved. An attorney representing the Williamses has been approached for comment, but no response has been received as of yet. Similarly, a representative for American Airlines stated they are “reviewing the complaint,” while a spokesperson for DFW Airport declined to comment, citing the ongoing litigation.
