Air New Zealand is set to revolutionise long-haul travel with an innovative new offering designed for ultimate comfort. The airline announced that starting on 18 November 2026, it will introduce Economy Skynests, a feature that allows passengers to enjoy lie-flat sleeping arrangements during its ultra-long flights between Auckland and New York.

This move, described by Air New Zealand as a “world-first innovation,” promises passengers the chance to fully stretch out and rest. The Economy Skynests consist of six individual pods meticulously designed within the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Each pod is crafted to provide a serene sleeping environment, equipped with a comfortable mattress, pillow, sheets, a blanket, and a seatbelt for added security.

Passengers will have the option to book a four-hour session inside these pods, priced starting at $495. This booking includes a complimentary “Nestcessities” kit, which contains several items aimed at enhancing the travel experience, including an eye mask, socks, earplugs, therapeutic skincare products from Aotea, and a dental kit. Importantly, each passenger is limited to one session per flight, encouraging a fair allocation of these spaces among travellers.

Nikhil Ravishankar, Air New Zealand’s Chief Executive, highlighted the airline’s unique perspective on long-distance travel. He stated, “New Zealand’s unique location means we understand long haul travel better than anyone.” The floatation of the Skynyst service, catered to long-haul flights, is presented as a simple yet impactful concept: replacing a headrest with a bedrest, providing flyers with a chance to arrive at their destination well-rested.
The space within each pod measures approximately 80 inches long and 25 inches wide, making it suitable for passengers seeking privacy and comfort. Furthermore, each pod comes equipped with USB charging outlets, a reading light, and cooling ventilation, alongside a privacy curtain to ensure a restful environment.
The introduction of this service builds on Air New Zealand’s reputation for innovating the Economy cabin experience. The airline previously launched its Economy Skycouch, which transformed rows of economy seats into a temporary sleeping space that could accommodate individuals, couples, or families. By adding Skynests, the airline is expanding the available options to enhance passenger comfort on very long flights.
Air New Zealand is not the only airline looking to enhance sleeping arrangements. Following suit, United Airlines made an announcement earlier this year regarding its “Relax Row,” which allows seats to convert into a couch, aimed at families travelling with children, couples, or solo travellers. This feature is set to debut in 2027 and will be rolled out across more than 200 Boeing aircraft by 2030.
Experts posit that United Airlines might adopt a booking and pricing structure akin to its international counterparts, similar to what Air New Zealand is implementing with its Economy Skynests. The competitive landscape is rapidly evolving, and both airlines are keen to provide added value to their travel offerings in a bid to attract more customers.
Looking ahead, Air New Zealand’s Economy Skynests offer a glimpse into the future of long-haul travel, suggesting a significant shift towards more comfortable flight experiences. With innovations like these emerging in the aviation industry, passengers may soon find themselves with better options than ever before when it comes to enduring long flights.
Travellers eager for a more restful and private experience in the sky can look forward to the launch of Economy Skynests, set to redefine the comfort standards in economy travel on what is expected to be one of the world’s longest flight routes. As airlines continue to innovate, the principles of comfort and convenience may make flying long distances more appealing than ever.
