Authorities in Florida are currently searching for the driver of a pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run incident that left nine high school students with minor injuries. The accident occurred on Monday, April 13, at approximately 8:30 a.m. as the bus was in the process of picking up students near Southeast 145th Street and Southeast 38th Terrace in Summerfield.

At the time of the collision, 54 students from Belleview High School were on the bus. According to school district officials, nine of these students were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary evaluations. However, there appears to be some discrepancy regarding the number of students needing hospitalisation, as police have reported that only five were transported for treatment.

Brad Jones, assistant principal at Belleview High School, confirmed that the injured students were assessed by emergency medical services (EMS) following the crash. He indicated that most injuries consisted of minor scrapes and bruises. “The priority was to ensure all students were safe and received the care they needed,” Jones stated.
Witnesses reported that the bus was struck from behind by a pickup truck which was described as white, blue, and orange. Following the collision, the driver of the truck fled the scene, prompting local authorities to launch an investigation into the incident.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is leading the search for the vehicle involved in the crash and is appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the FHP at *347 or the Ocala Station at (352) 512-6634. As of now, authorities have not released any further details about the potential suspect or the vehicle’s whereabouts.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety, particularly in school zones. While the students involved in this incident sustained minor injuries, the repercussions could have been far more severe if the collision had occurred at a different time or under different circumstances.
In response to the incident, school officials are emphasising the importance of road safety and the necessity of vigilance among both drivers and pedestrians. Local schools have been urged to remind students about safety measures while boarding or disembarking from buses.
As the investigation continues, the community has begun to rally in support of the injured students and their families. Parents and local residents have expressed gratitude that the injuries were not more serious, and many are hoping for a swift resolution to the case involving the elusive driver.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise on the roads, particularly in areas frequented by young students. Authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety of students and are determined to hold accountable those who jeopardise that safety.
