A seaplane was remarkably landed on a busy road in Arizona after the aircraft’s engine failed mid-flight. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 12, involved pilot Mike Tragarz and two passengers who, fortunately, sustained only minor injuries despite the alarming circumstances.

Tragarz took off from Hangar Hacienda, a private airstrip located in Laveen, Arizona. The seaplane was flying seamlessly at an altitude of approximately 2,500 feet above Phoenix when the unexpected engine failure occurred. In an interview with local news outlets, Tragarz recounted the alarming moment as he prepared to issue a mayday call, only to discover that the aircraft was losing altitude.

“I was about to call for a mayday to Sky Harbor…and that’s when I noticed we were not holding altitude,” Tragarz explained to local NBC affiliate WBNS-TV. “We were descending. We had lost power.” In that instant, the pilot understood that he needed to find a safe landing spot without delay.
Despite the usual busyness of the area, Tragarz spotted a clear stretch of road on 7th Street, which appeared to him as a makeshift landing strip. “It looked like a landing strip,” he said. “Literally, there were no cars.” His quick thinking and decisive action enabled him to land the seaplane successfully, avoiding any potential collisions with vehicles or nearby buildings.
Emergency services, including firefighters from the Phoenix Fire Department, arrived on the scene shortly after 2:15 p.m. local time to assess the situation. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the pilot and his passengers were minor, and none required hospitalisation. According to Captain DJ Lee of the Phoenix Fire Department, the situation could have been much more severe.
Describing the incident as a “miracle”, Lee remarked, “They walked away from this crash, and no one else got hit. It was pretty much a miracle.” The seaplane managed to avoid all traffic and individuals, with the only notable damage resulting in a broken water main.
While such emergencies are not uncommon in aviation, the combination of successful decision-making and sheer luck played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all involved. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by pilots and passengers when unexpected mechanical failures occur.
The Phoenix Fire Department has not yet released any further statements regarding the ongoing investigation into the incident. However, the local community has expressed relief that there were no serious injuries or fatalities.
Tragarz’s quick reflexes and ability to remain calm under pressure have been widely praised. His successful emergency landing stands as a testament to the skills and training that pilots undergo, as well as the importance of remaining vigilant during flights.
As the trio continues to recover from their ordeal, their experience will undoubtedly remain a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of aviation and the vital role that quick-thinking plays in ensuring safety in such scenarios. The incident concludes with a triumphant note, highlighting both the successful emergency landing and the fortunate circumstances that allowed everyone to escape with minor injuries.
