A 26-year-old man, identified as Mathen Jackson from Kailua-Kona, tragically drowned after taking a leap from a cliff at Lekeleke Bay, a popular yet perilous site on Hawaii’s Big Island. The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon, 11 April, when local authorities received reports of a swimmer in distress at approximately 5:13 p.m.

According to the Hawaii Police Department, witnesses observed Jackson and a friend enjoying a meal together prior to the jump. In a moment of spontaneity, Jackson was encouraged to leap off the cliff but soon found himself struggling against a strong current. As alarming scenes unfolded, his friend immediately contacted emergency services.

In a valiant effort to rescue Jackson, his friend and another bystander entered the turbulent waters. They managed to reach the distressed man and brought him to a nearby tour boat that had responded to the emergency call. Despite their efforts to perform life-saving measures onboard, the situation remained critical. Emergency personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department took over once the boat arrived at Keauhou Pier, where Jackson was subsequently transported to Kona Community Hospital.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of rescuers and medical staff, Jackson succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. An autopsy has been scheduled to ascertain the exact cause of his death, but authorities have indicated that they do not suspect foul play.
Lekeleke Bay, also referred to as the “End of the World,” is a well-known public shoreline access on the west coast of the Big Island. It attracts adventurous visitors seeking the thrill of cliff jumping. However, local residents advise against such activities unless individuals receive proper guidance from those familiar with the safest methods.
The stark contrast between the allure of adventure and the inherent dangers of the ocean is a point of contention among locals. Many express concern over the number of tourists attempting risky exploits without understanding the specific risks posed by the area’s strong currents. The terrain is beautiful but treacherous, and local advice is often essential to ensure safety.
In light of this tragic incident, officials are urging visitors to respect warning signs and heed local advice when engaging in water activities. They emphasise the importance of safety measures and the need to be aware of one’s surroundings, particularly in locations known for their unpredictable water conditions.
The community has been left reeling from the tragedy, with many expressing sympathy for Jackson’s friends and family. The ripple effect of such incidents is evident as the local community navigates the balance between welcoming tourists and ensuring their safety.
Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to reach out to Kona Patrol Acting Sergeant Reuben Pukahi at the police department. The authorities are keen to gather insights that could help understand the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event. As the investigation continues, the loss of a young man serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities that come with coastal adventures.
