Richard was last seen on the morning of Sunday, 5 April, when he departed from the couple’s home on Hughs Street in Ouyen around 8:00 a.m., the time he typically began his day’s work on their 1,600-acre property. Concern grew for his wellbeing that day when he failed to return for lunch. Donna became increasingly worried and commenced searching the area, eventually enlisting the help of a family friend later that evening.

The situation escalated when Richard did not return by the following morning. Alarmed by his unusual disappearance and the fact that he had left his phone at home, Donna reached out to Victoria Police to report him missing. Shortly after, local volunteers alongside the State Emergency Service began searching the property for any signs of Richard.
Tragically, his body was discovered during a police-assisted search around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police confirmed that Richard had sustained fatal gunshot wounds before being buried, prompting detectives from the Missing Persons Squad to label the case as suspicious. An autopsy later affirmed the cause of death as a homicide, although the identity of the suspect remains unknown.
Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Trewavas, involved in the investigation, expressed deep concern over the nature of Richard’s death. “Sadly, Richard has clearly met with foul play,” he stated, adding that they are eager to uncover any information regarding the circumstances of the incident. The police are keen to engage with anyone who may hold insights which could lead to breakthroughs in solving the case.
Community members have also been affected profoundly by the news of Richard’s death. Donna described her husband as a kind-hearted person who would “give you anything,” emphasising how deeply missed he will be by their five children and numerous grandchildren. The couple had been together for 32 years, building a life alongside their shared passion for farming.
Amid investigations, local authorities are considering a possible connection between Richard’s death and a rise in reports of livestock theft in the region; it is noted that Richard had recently reported several sheep missing from his farm. This raises the suspicion that his tragic demise may be linked to disputes over such thefts.
Although the farm is located in a remote area, it is deemed accessible by passers-by using nearby roads. Trewavas commented, “We suspect that a person who knows Ric is responsible for this crime,” indicating that they believe the perpetrator may have been familiar with Richard and his routine.
Evidence gathering continues as investigators engage with local residents and examine available CCTV footage in hopes of uncovering crucial details. The police are urging anyone with information, regardless of how minor it may seem, to come forward and assist in bringing closure to Richard’s family and ensuring that justice is served in this case.
As the investigation unfolds, local authorities remain committed to solving this harrowing mystery. The case has resonated throughout the community, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the police and the public to aid in their efforts.
