In a compelling tale of resilience and determination, 26-year-old Sumbul Ari has recounted her harrowing experience with a debilitating condition that ultimately led her to self-diagnose cancer after being repeatedly dismissed by medical professionals. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-advocacy in the healthcare system.
Before her ordeal began, Ari described herself as “fit, healthy and very active,” boasting a background in running half marathons, powerlifting, and indoor rowing. “I was committed to the gym six days a week; I’ve never been a smoker or an excessive drinker,” she stated, emphasising her generally robust health and routine annual blood checks that always showed normal results.

However, the onset of excessive itching marked the beginning of her struggle. “At first, I thought it was a reaction to something,” Ari recalled, speculating that the irritation could stem from perfumes, deodorants, or even laundry products. Despite her efforts to eliminate potential allergens from her environment, the itching persisted. Alongside this, she experienced night sweats and acne, attributing these changes to hormonal fluctuations.
As new, more distressing symptoms began to surface—including extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, changes in her voice, skin infections, and relentless brain fog—Ari started to connect the dots, realising that her health issues were more significant than mere irritations. In a desperate attempt to find relief, she sought advice from medical practitioners.
Ari’s first visit to a doctor came two months after she began experiencing severe itching. “I explained that I would wake up scratching furiously, as if something was crawling under my skin,” she recounted. Unfortunately, the doctor’s response was underwhelming. “He simply told me to ‘moisturise my skin,’ attributing it to the hot and humid climate,” Ari said, feeling unsatisfied by the suggestion.
Following this, she sought further help for an infection, mentioning her ongoing issues. However, even after being treated for scabies, she left the doctor’s office frustrated when her concerns were largely dismissed. “It’s just one of those things,” the doctor had said.
Despite her blood work returning with normal results, Ari began to feel hopeless. “I honestly gave up hope at one point,” she admitted. Yet rather than resigning herself to her fate, she conducted her own research, diving into online forums that offered tips and remedies. Trials including mould removal and various home treatments yielded no significant improvement.
As her symptoms amplified, Ari continued consulting different doctors. Despite feeling increasingly unwell, she finally caught a break during a colonoscopy when a naturopath offered her a glimmer of hope. Unfortunately, that relief was short-lived, as the itching returned with greater intensity and was accompanied by the emergence of a lump in her neck.
A routine internet search marked a turning point in her health journey. After reading about her symptoms—itchy skin, night sweats, and fatigue—Ari recognised the alarming possibility of cancer. After a series of consultations, her fears were confirmed; she had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “At that moment, I just wanted my symptoms to vanish and to sleep without waking up in discomfort,” she reflected. “Being told I had cancer was somewhat of a relief; at least I finally had an explanation.”
Currently undergoing chemotherapy, Ari has experienced a remarkable improvement in her quality of life since starting treatment. “All my previous symptoms have disappeared,” she shared with a sense of gratitude. “Since my first chemo session, I can sleep peacefully night after night, and I’ve stopped scratching myself.” This newfound comfort has rekindled her appreciation for restful sleep, which she described as a luxury she had long forgotten.
Despite her ongoing treatment, Ari maintains an active lifestyle as a content creator, ensuring she stays physically engaged through walking, running, and rowing. “I focus on being healthy by eating right, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest,” she remarked, highlighting the positive outlook that has emerged from her turbulent experience.
Ari’s journey serves not only as a personal victory but also as a potent message to others facing similar struggles. “Never stop advocating for yourself,” she urged. “If you know something is wrong, keep pushing until you’re heard.” Reflecting on her past feelings of despair, she imparted valuable advice: “Let go of pressures and expectations. This is your time to focus on healing and peace. Life may feel overwhelming, but you must remember that you’re not behind—you’re simply navigating your journey differently.”
In sharing her story, Sumbul Ari hopes to inspire others to remain steadfast in their health pursuits and to never lose faith in their ability to advocate for themselves. Her experience illuminates the critical need for listening to patients and addressing their concerns with the seriousness they deserve.
