In an extraordinary tale of resilience, a North Dakota couple is sharing their harrowing experience of simultaneously battling cancer. Spencer Eddy, 39, and his wife Jolene Eddy, 38, both received life-altering diagnoses within months of each other while caring for their three children.

Spencer had been suffering from dizzy spells for years, often dismissed by medical professionals as simply vertigo. Despite his wife’s insistence on further investigation, including an MRI scan, they were repeatedly told the likelihood of a brain tumour was exceedingly low. However, the situation took a decisive turn in April 2024 when Jolene observed that Spencer was walking with an unsteady gait, prompting them to seek help from an ear, nose, and throat specialist. This led to a startling discovery: a tumour the size of a lime was located in Spencer’s brain.

Following the MRI scans, Spencer was referred to the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. There, doctors diagnosed him with medulloblastoma, a malignant tumour typically seen in children, but which can also affect adults. The news left the couple in shock. “We were terrified,” said Jolene. “The doctors explained that the tumour was blocking vital fluid flow to the spinal cord. They couldn’t understand how Spencer was still walking or talking.”
A week later, Spencer underwent a lengthy 10-hour surgery that succeeded in removing 85% of the tumour. However, the operation raised numerous concerns; the couple was left uncertain if Spencer would ever speak or walk again. Following surgery, he required extensive speech and physical therapy, alongside several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to target the remaining tumour.
Just as Spencer began to navigate his recovery, Jolene received shocking news of her own. It was April 2025 when a seemingly innocuous lump appeared under her armpit. Initially dismissing it due to the stress surrounding Spencer’s health, Jolene persisted in her instincts and opted for the lump to be removed. The test results revealed breast cancer, leaving Jolene reeling. “I was absolutely floored,” she recalled, demonstrating a gratitude for her intuition amidst a tumultuous time.
The couple immediately turned their minds to their children and the potential impact of their diagnoses on the family unit. “If one parent dies, the other can provide support,” Jolene expressed. “But if both parents die, what happens then?” Following her diagnosis, Jolene underwent a double mastectomy and was prescribed hormone blockers while Spencer continued his treatments.
Navigating the recovery process presented its own challenges. Jolene experienced significant side effects from her surgery, including vomiting and frequent fainting. Ultimately, she required a blood transfusion but gradually began to heal. Despite her own struggles, Jolene took charge of family life, all the while ensuring her children were supported as best as they could be.
Jolene explained, “I still have to prepare meals and take care of my family, even when I’m not feeling well. Our kids are coping as well as they can, but their perspective has shifted. In school, they write about how they hope we get better.” The couple’s three children have had to face complexities for which many families are never prepared.
Fortunately, after enduring months of treatment, both Spencer and Jolene achieved significant health milestones. Spencer completed his treatment in April 2025 and has since been declared cancer-free, while Jolene has received similar encouraging news regarding her health. The couple continues to attend follow-up appointments with their oncologists together, staying vigilant about their health.
As Spencer regains his strength and mobility, Jolene remains dedicated to supporting their family and fostering positivity in their lives. “We’re holding on to hope and optimism,” Jolene said. “While we’re living out what many would consider a nightmare, we believe we have a long life ahead of us to fight for, and we’re not going to give up.”
This brave couple’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the strength of the human spirit, even in the face of daunting adversities. Their optimism and determination reflect a determination to embrace life fully as they move forward together.
