In an innovative approach to a school project on a notable historical figure, ten-year-old Luz’Layla Villanueva has captured the attention of many with her unique presentation on U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. The project, initially a standard research assignment, took an unexpected turn when it featured a series of selfies of Luz’Layla herself, which she included to add a personal touch.

Dulce Villanueva, Luz’Layla’s older sister, played an instrumental role in the development of the project. She recounted how, just as they were preparing to leave for school, she discovered the inclusion of the personal photographs. “The original project was a ‘Notable Figure Research Project’,” Dulce explained. “Luz’Layla chose Johnson as her subject due to his efforts to improve education and because of the freeway named after him that they often saw while driving. It felt personal to her.”

When Dulce saw the accompanying selfies for the first time, she knew a revision was necessary. Despite her initial surprise, she decided to allow some personal flair, suggesting a compromise that would satisfy both educational requirements and her sister’s desire for self-expression. “I let her keep the front cover photo of herself, but we replaced the rest with appropriate images of Lyndon B. Johnson,” she said. This decision helped maintain the project’s educational integrity while also embracing Luz’Layla’s bubbly personality.
Dulce shared the final version of Luz’Layla’s project on TikTok, where it quickly gained traction and went viral. Viewers were charmed by Luz’Layla’s charm and humour, as well as her confidence in presenting her work. The noticeable response from the online community has brought a sense of joy and pride to both sisters. “Reading all the comments made me realise that in future projects, I can let her have a ‘thank you slide’ to include personal pictures,” Dulce added.
On the day of the school presentation, Luz’Layla’s enthusiasm was evident. According to Dulce, her sister reported a positive experience, explaining that she managed to make the entire class laugh. “I asked her how the presentation went when I picked her up from school and she said, ‘I made the whole class laugh and the teacher thought it was funny too!’” This humorous take on a historical figure has not only showcased Luz’Layla’s creativity but has also solidified her standing as a well-known personality at her new school, where she has recently started this academic year.
Dulce highlighted that despite these exciting moments, the family is currently navigating through a challenging time. Their mother is awaiting a liver transplant, which adds pressure on Luz’Layla to manage her studies while aiding at home. The family has been working hard to support one another during this period. “Luz’Layla has had a lot of discussions about balancing her schoolwork and her responsibilities at home. We endeavour to keep her spirits high,” Dulce noted.
The fun and light-hearted nature of the project has proven to be a morale booster for the family, with Dulce expressing how monumental it is for them to witness Luz’Layla’s personality shine through. “Her ability to make others laugh and smile, especially during tough times, means everything to us,” she said. “She reads the comments from viewers and it brings her immense joy, knowing she can connect with people.”
Luz’Layla’s story is not just about a school project; it highlights the power of creativity, family support, and resilience in the face of adversity. In a world often filled with challenges, her approach serves as a reminder of the importance of individual expression and the joy it can bring to both oneself and others.
