The much-loved Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin attraction at Walt Disney World has officially reopened following an extensive refurbishment. After being closed for eight months, the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland ride welcomes guests back with a renewed vigor and an array of innovative enhancements. The reopening took place on April 8, and the upgrades promise a fresh and engaging experience for visitors.
The revitalised ride invites guests to join Buzz Lightyear on his mission to thwart the nefarious plans of Evil Emperor Zurg, a storyline familiar to fans of the Toy Story franchise. The refurbishment has introduced several significant improvements that enhance the interactive nature of the attraction.

A standout addition is a brand new scene featuring an adorable robot named Buddy. This character, developed through a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios, plays a crucial role in preparing guests for their adventure. Prior to embarking on their mission, space rangers are guided by Buddy in a practice range, setting the stage for their encounter with Zurg.

The ride vehicles themselves have also undergone a transformation, closely resembling Buzz Lightyear from the beloved film series. The updated Star Cruisers are now equipped with state-of-the-art technology that includes onboard video monitors displaying real-time score updates. These enhancements allow players to monitor their performance as they engage with the ride’s various challenges.
Another significant improvement lies in the handheld blasters, which have been redesigned for increased accuracy. With continuous laser functionality and multiple blaster colours per vehicle, guests will find it easier to target their foes. Additionally, the ride experience is enriched by new lighting, sound, and vibration effects, further immersing players in the action as they attempt to score points by hitting targets throughout the ride.
Speaking of targets, the previous static Z targets have now been retrofitted with interactive technology that allows them to react and light up when struck. This upgrade not only increases engagement but makes the gameplay more dynamic and visually stimulating, providing a more rewarding experience for participants.
Moreover, guests can capture their exciting journey with a newly introduced PhotoPass opportunity, which displays their score and rank. This feature allows visitors to take home a tangible memory, complete with bragging rights for their performance during the ride.
In a promotional video shared on social media prior to the reopening, software development manager Evan Klein expressed his enthusiasm for the revamped attraction. He highlighted the array of new gameplay features, the redesigned vehicles, and the enriched storytelling elements that guests can look forward to experiencing.
Originally launched in November 1998, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin closed for its refurbishment in August 2025. The timing of its reopening coincides with the anticipated release of “Toy Story 5,” which is set to hit cinemas on June 19. The new film reportedly explores the ongoing adventures of Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and other beloved characters as they navigate the challenges posed by children’s evolving interests, particularly with regards to the rise of electronic entertainment.
With these enhancements, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin promises to be a more thrilling and engaging experience than ever before, reaffirming its status as a beloved attraction within the Magic Kingdom. For fans and newcomers alike, the revitalised ride is ready to inspire a new generation of space rangers, making it a must-visit when at Disney World.
