Nicole Peace, a resident of Maryland, has come forward to share her personal journey with Cushing’s disease, having endured a series of symptoms that she initially attributed to stress. Her experience may shine a light on this rare condition, which affects approximately 10 to 15 individuals per million annually, predominantly women, particularly those aged between 20 and 50.

Cushing’s disease is caused by an excess of cortisol, a hormone that plays a critical role in various bodily functions. The condition often develops due to pituitary tumours or prolonged use of certain medications. For Peace, the onset of her symptoms included dizzy spells, significant weight gain, persistent headaches, brain fog, and changes in skin pigmentation, leading her to seek medical attention.

Initially, Peace believed her symptoms were linked to the stress she was experiencing at the time. However, after numerous doctor visits and blood tests that yielded normal results, the root cause remained elusive until a pivotal appointment with an endocrinologist in 2025. It was during this visit that further examinations were conducted, ultimately leading to a pituitary panel test which revealed elevated levels of cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
The official diagnosis of Cushing’s disease was confirmed after imaging scans identified a benign tumour. The revelation was both a relief and a source of further challenges for Peace, who had embarked on a journey rife with medical uncertainty.
Cleveland Clinic outlines that excess cortisol can lead to an array of debilitating symptoms, including significant fatigue, mood swings, and skin abnormalities. If left unaddressed, Cushing’s disease can pose severe health risks, increasing susceptibility to infections, blood clots, hypertension, and diabetes, among other complications. However, many patients can successfully manage the condition with appropriate treatment, which may involve surgery, medication, or alterations in steroid use, allowing them to maintain a normal life expectancy.
Following her diagnosis, Peace underwent treatment but noted that the recovery process has proven to be one of the toughest aspects of her journey. “Surgery is not even the hard part,” she remarked in an interview with WBAL-TV 11 News, “Recovery is the hardest part because people go through so much. It was an up-and-down rollercoaster.”
Throughout her recovery, she has faced fluctuating energy levels; some days are filled with vitality, while others leave her barely able to rise from bed. She is currently on hormone replacement therapy, managing to regain some semblance of normalcy while still grappling with lingering symptoms, such as headaches and cognitive delays.
Peace hopes that by sharing her experience, she can encourage others to trust their instincts when it comes to their health. “Don’t ignore even the smallest sign that something is not right,” she advises. “I mean, trust your body. We know our body; we know when something’s not right.”
The rarity of Cushing’s disease can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis or delays in receiving appropriate care, making awareness crucial. By relaying her story, Peace aims to highlight the importance of vigilance regarding health concerns and the necessity of advocating for one’s well-being in the face of ambiguous symptoms.
Healthcare professionals emphasise that early detection and intervention are key to managing Cushing’s disease effectively. The personal challenges encountered by patients like Nicole Peace underline the importance of continued research and support for individuals battling rare hormonal conditions.
As she continues her journey towards recovery, Peace remains resolute in her mission to share her story, hoping to empower others to be proactive in seeking medical advice and care. Her experience serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding rare conditions and the crucial role of patient advocacy in shaping healthcare outcomes.
