He recently spoke with *PEOPLE*, revealing that the upcoming season will offer a new “beginning, middle, and end” for the series.

One of the most notable changes is the resolution of the main character, Jimmy, portrayed by Jason Segel, who has spent the past three seasons dealing with the grief of his late wife. The season finale saw him entering a new romantic relationship with Sofi, played by Cobie Smulders. Their relationship was highlighted in the concluding moments, where Jimmy is seen enjoying breakfast with Sofi after being coaxed into a reunion by Paul, characterised by Harrison Ford. This pivotal moment signifies a significant step forward for Jimmy as he begins to embrace life once more.
In a shift that was equally significant, Paul and his wife, Julie—played by Wendie Malick—decide to relocate across the country to be closer to their daughter, Meg. He explained that the team originally pitched *Shrinking* as a three-season narrative. “We wrote the third season as the end of this three-season story,” he said, emphasising the importance of providing closure while still leaving space for new narratives.
Moving forward, Lawrence acknowledged the changing landscape of television storytelling, suggesting that if Jimmy were to continue grappling with his grief in future episodes, it would likely not resonate with viewers. “If you picked up the fourth year and we came up on Jason Segel and his character was like, ‘You know, I’m still really sad about my wife,’ then people would be like, ‘Enough already’,” he shared.
Lawrence drew parallels with another of his successful shows, *Ted Lasso*, which also wrapped up its third season before being renewed. He expressed optimism about the richness of the *Shrinking* characters and the potential for further storytelling. “I think there’s a hundred more stories to tell,” he stated, believing that while Jimmy’s arc of overcoming grief has reached a conclusion, many other plots remain untapped.
In a message shared on social media, Lawrence reiterated his vision for the upcoming season, confirming that it will feature the same cast while embarking on a new narrative journey.
