In a legal dispute emerging from a cruise ship event, Florida resident Jeannette Beres is pursuing damages exceeding $75,000 following an accident on board the Celebrity Reflection. The incident occurred after a dance party held on July 14, 2025, when Beres reportedly tripped over a speaker that had been improperly positioned in the main atrium.

According to a civil complaint filed in the U.S. District Court of Southern Florida, the cruise line organised and promoted the dancing event, which required the setup of sound equipment. However, it is alleged that a speaker was placed directly on the circular dance floor, creating a hazardous situation for passengers. Beres claims that this placement contravened safety protocols, as it obstructed a space designed for movement and recreation.
After the dance party concluded, Beres asserts that while walking towards the dining area, she failed to notice the inadequately positioned speaker and subsequently fell. The resulting injuries reportedly include a fractured foot, alongside ongoing mental distress and limitations in her daily activities.
The complaint details that Beres has incurred substantial past and future medical expenses due to her injuries. Furthermore, she characterises her ongoing struggle as not merely physical but also psychological, referring to her mental anguish and inability to return to a normal life.
Beres’s legal action underscores a broader concern over safety practices aboard cruise ships. The complaint suggests that Celebrity Cruises had prior knowledge of similar dangers, citing 19 previous litigations where passengers encountered trip hazards aboard Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships — both of which are part of the Royal Caribbean Group.
The document outlines four distinct allegations of negligence against Celebrity Cruises. These include claims of negligent maintenance, failure to issue warnings about hazards, and inadequate inspections of passenger areas. Beres and her legal counsel are advocating for a jury trial to adjudicate the matter.
As the case unfolds, the cruise line has yet to respond to the allegations publicly. Beres’s legal team has reached out for comments and expects further developments as the trial date approaches.
The Celebrity Reflection, which began operations in 2012, is capable of accommodating over 3,000 passengers. It currently operates three and four-day trips to the Bahamas from its home port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The incident has raised questions about the safety protocols in place during on-board events, prompting scrutiny of how cruise lines address hazards that could compromise passenger well-being.
Beres’s situation serves as a stark reminder that despite the festive atmosphere often found on cruise ships, safety cannot be overlooked. As she navigates the challenges stemming from her injury, the legal proceedings may prompt a wider discussion regarding passenger safety and corporate responsibility within the cruising industry.
As this case progresses, all eyes will be on Celebrity Cruises’ response and whether they will take accountability for the alleged oversight that left one of their passengers injured. Both parties are gearing up for what promises to be a significant legal battle involving maritime safety and passenger rights.
