Veteran actress Jean Smart has disclosed that she underwent a critical triple bypass heart surgery while filming the third season of her acclaimed series, “Hacks.” The revelation comes after the 74-year-old previously hinted at having had a heart procedure but withheld specific details about the severity of her condition.

In an interview with Variety, Smart recounted her experiences during the filming, sharing that she began to notice symptoms like fatigue and chest pressure, which she initially attributed to a lack of fitness. “I had gotten used to feeling a little pressure, like if I’d go up a couple of flights of stairs. But it would always just go away,” she explained. The actress vividly remembered filming an intense keg stand scene during a fraternity party episode, stating, “After several takes, I was like, ‘Did you get it? Was that enough?’ I was feeling a little tired, but I didn’t think anything of it.”
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner struggled to connect her growing exhaustion with a potential health issue, believing it stemmed solely from her fitness levels. “I would always think, ‘Jean, you’re in such crappy shape,’” she recalled. It wasn’t until a few days later, when her condition persisted, that Smart realised she needed to take action regarding her health.
Facing the loss of her husband Richard Gilliland in 2021, Smart became more conscious of her health, particularly considering her children, Connor and Forrest, had just lost their father. “I thought, ‘You haven’t seen your cardiologist in a long time. Don’t be stupid. Your kids just lost their dad!’” After reaching out to her cardiologist after hours, she was quickly advised to go to the nearest emergency room. “Yeah, you’re gonna go to the nearest emergency room right now!” she was told.
Smart decided to finish filming her scene before heading to the hospital, informing her driver on the way, “’Flag on the play. We’re not going back home. We’re going to the hospital.’” This decisive moment proved pivotal as she learned the real extent of her health concerns.
During her time in the hospital, co-creator and co-star of “Hacks,” Paul W. Downs, was present, visiting his own mother. He provided support during a challenging time, sitting with Smart as she faced the harsh reality of her condition. “I was there with her as she was talking to surgeons and hearing them say, ‘You can’t get a stent. You have to get a triple bypass,’” Downs recalled.
Despite the seriousness of her situation, Smart admits her fear did not surface until she awoke post-surgery. “I wasn’t really scared until I woke up the next day, thinking about what they had to do. You start to feel so fragile,” she said, reflecting on the surgery’s implications on her health and lifestyle.
Support arrived from unexpected places within the set, with her co-star Hannah Einbinder exalting Smart’s strength, claiming, “She is the most durable woman in America … I tell her this all the time.” This encouragement alongside her own determination illustrates the resilience Smart possesses, helping her navigate the choppy waters of recovery.
Smart’s candid account has opened up the conversation about heart health, particularly among women who may experience similar symptoms. Following her surgery, she aims to adopt a more proactive approach towards her health, prioritising regular check-ups and listening to her body.
As fans and colleagues rally behind the beloved actress, her journey underscores the importance of acknowledging health issues and seeking timely medical attention. Smart’s experience acts as a reminder for individuals to not ignore symptoms, no matter how benign they may seem at first glance. This spirited attitude could inspire others not only in the entertainment industry but across different realms, reinforcing the need for vigilance concerning personal health.
