In an inspiring display of integrity, a Chick-fil-A employee from Kinston, North Carolina, recently gained recognition for returning a substantial sum of money he discovered while on his break. Jaydon Cintron stumbled upon nearly $10,000 in cash hidden near a toilet in the restaurant’s bathroom, demonstrating an admirable commitment to honesty.

The incident unfolded when Cintron discovered two envelopes—one containing approximately $5,000 from First Citizens Bank and the other holding $4,333 labelled as belonging to Truist Bank. Rather than considering the temptation of keeping the money, the 20-year-old employee promptly took the envelopes to the restaurant’s human resources department.

Cintron reflected on his decision, explaining, “I just picked it up, and I brought it to human resources.” He expressed that his actions stemmed from a sense of moral obligation and a guiding faith, stating, “Money is useless without character.” This sentiment underlines the values that guided his choice to act ethically in a situation where many might have reacted differently.
Acts of honesty often carry their own rewards, and in this case, the rightful owner of the lost cash soon came forward to claim it. Following the reunion with the money, he endeavoured to express his gratitude towards Cintron by offering a reward of $500 for his integrity. However, Cintron initially declined, emphasising that he engaged in the act of returning the money simply because it was the right thing to do. “I don’t want anything out of this,” he remarked. “I did this because that’s what Jesus would do.”
Despite his initial reluctance to accept the reward, Cintron eventually agreed to accept it after several insistences from the money’s owner. His humble response to the situation illustrates the profound impact that personal values can have on everyday actions, reinforcing the notion that true moral character often shines in moments of temptation.
Local Chick-Fil-A Owner-Operator John McPhaul praised Cintron’s actions in an email statement, saying, “We’re grateful for Team Members like Jaydon who demonstrate integrity and a genuine care for others.” McPhaul further noted that incidents like these reflect the core values the restaurant aims to uphold daily, commending Cintron for his commendable conduct.
Kinston’s Police Chief, Keith Goyette, also highlighted Cintron’s admirable decision, stating, “A lot of people will, unfortunately, take that money and run with it, but kudos to that employee at Chick-Fil-A. He definitely deserves a reward.” Such comments reinforce the message that honesty is not just a personal virtue but a community treasure, deserving of recognition and celebration.
Cintron’s moral clarity comes at a time when societal standards are often questioned. His choice to return the money rather than keeping it showcases the enduring importance of integrity in a world where many might prioritise personal gain over ethical considerations.
As Cintron moves forward, his story serves as a reminder that true leadership and integrity are about doing the right thing when no one is watching—a message he embodies and one that resonates widely. In a landscape often marred by negativity, his actions offer inspiration and hope, reminding us all that goodness still prevails in today’s society.
