Reza Farahan, renowned for his role on the reality television series Shahs of Sunset, has released a new memoir titled *Memoirs of a Gay Shah: My Story of Family, Fame, and Becoming a King,* which hit the shelves on 7 April. In this deeply personal account, Farahan reflects on his journey and the relationships that have significantly influenced his life. Among these revelations, he discusses a romantic connection with Bob Harper, the former trainer on *The Biggest Loser*.

Farahan, now 52, recounts how he and Harper first crossed paths while working as personal trainers at a studio. Their professional relationship quickly evolved into a close friendship, with Farahan eventually attending Harper’s classes and the two becoming “inseparable.” According to Farahan, this friendship eventually took a romantic turn, though he describes it as primarily a “friends-with-benefits” situation.

In his memoir, Farahan expresses that he desired a deeper relationship with Harper, but felt hesitant to pursue the matter, sensing that Harper was not looking for a serious commitment. “Bob and I carried on like that for a good while,” he reflects, acknowledging the complexity of their connection. His feelings, however, shifted when Harper married a man named Scott, prompting Farahan to forge a new friendship with the couple.
This unconventional arrangement took an unexpected turn, as Farahan claims their relationship transitioned into a “threesome,” albeit with bittersweet undertones. He candidly writes about the heartbreak of losing Scott, who he says passed away, despite having no ill feelings towards him: “The end of this story is a bit bittersweet… even though Bob and I didn’t last forever, we remain friends to this day.”
Through his experiences with Harper, Farahan grapples with the notion of self-worth in relationships. He shares in his memoir that these events were pivotal in making him realise that being ‘second place’ in someone’s life was not sufficient. Farahan articulates his yearning for a stable, long-term partnership: “I really wanted to have a stable, long-term relationship with someone who was loving and loyal to me and only me.”
Harper himself has previously confirmed the past romance on *Watch What Happens Live* in 2015, telling host Andy Cohen, “We had a thing—a very, very long time ago! It was a tawdry little thing! I love Reza though. I love him!” This mutual affection underscores the enduring bond that the two have maintained despite their romantic history.
The memoir encapsulates not only Farahan’s love life but also his broader journey of self-discovery and cultural identity. He shares that he first found himself in the United States at the age of four following an unexpected family exile from Iran due to a revolution. This backdrop laid the foundation for his development into a “larger-than-life” personality, as depicted in his time on Shahs of Sunset.
In *Memoirs of a Gay Shah*, Farahan aims to convey a heartfelt narrative that blends humour with poignant reflections on personal growth. He hopes his story will resonate with readers, stating, “If this book makes even one person feel seen, understood or a little less alone, then it was all worth it.”
With the recent cancellation of Shahs of Sunset after nine successful seasons in early 2022, Farahan has remained active in the public eye. He returned to Bravo with a new series titled The Valley: Persian Style earlier this year, indicating that his journey is far from over.
As he reflects on his life in the memoir, Farahan sets out to inspire others who may be grappling with their own identities. Expressing a mix of excitement and trepidation about the release, he emphasises his pride in overcoming the challenges of his past to become the person he is today. The memoir promises to provide insight not only into his romantic experiences but also into the cultural pride and resilience that have defined his narrative.
