Ted McGinley Says Failed “Scrubs ”Audition Paved the Way for His Role on “Shrinking”

Ted McGinley, the renowned actor, expressed his profound appreciation for his role in the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” highlighting a strong connection to his character, Derek. During a recent appearance on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia, McGinley reflected on his long-standing desire to collaborate with creator Bill Lawrence and shared insights into his journey leading to this new role.

McGinley, 67, noted that he had long pursued opportunities to work with Lawrence, revealing that attempts over the years had often fallen short. “He tried to cast me a few times… generally, I tanked it. It didn’t work out,” he remarked, adding that one of these attempts included auditioning for the role of Dr. Perry Cox in the popular sitcom “Scrubs.” Ultimately, the character was played by John C. McGinley, a decision for which Ted expressed gratitude, saying, “probably, thank God, for Scrubs.” Notably, despite sharing a last name, the two actors are not related.

Lawrence remained persistent in wanting to team up with McGinley. The actor recalled the moment when the creator reached out with an opportunity, saying, “Bill Lawrence said, ‘Someday we’re going to work together. We’re going to do something.’” When Lawrence finally called about a minor role in a new pilot, McGinley’s enthusiastic response was immediate: “Yes, I’m interested. Say when, say where.”

Upon receiving the script for “Shrinking,” McGinley felt an instant affinity for the character. He recalled, “I said, ‘This is the best half-hour script I’ve ever read.’ It made me laugh and cry, and I said, ‘This is so smart.’” His instincts proved accurate as the show received considerable acclaim.

At a special event, “An Evening with Shrinking at PaleyLive,” held on December 12, McGinley elaborated on the significance of portraying Derek, the supportive husband to Christa Miller’s Liz and a neighbour to Jason Segel’s Jimmy. The experience has been one of the standout highlights of his career. “I have had great jobs,” he affirmed, emphasising the quality of his past work collaborating with talented individuals. Yet, he insisted that this role occupies “the sweetest spot [he’s] ever been.”

In McGinley’s view, Derek embodies positivity and comfort, stating, “Derek represents light at the end of the tunnel and a warm blanket when you’re on a raft in the middle of a cold. And I think that’s beautiful. That’s how I see it.”
