Melissa Gilbert has opened up about the ongoing legal troubles faced by her husband, Timothy Busfield, during an interview on ‘Good Morning America’. The actress stated that her relationship with Busfield, whom she married in April 2013, was not entered into lightly, and she feels fully informed about his past allegations.

Busfield has recently been indicted by a grand jury on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor, all of which are classified as third-degree felonies. The indictments stem from incidents involving two 11-year-old boys whom he reportedly met on the set of the television series ‘The Cleaning Lady’. Gilbert’s comments came following an arrest warrant issued by the Albuquerque Police Department.
In the interview with George Stephanopoulos, Gilbert elaborated on the indictments as well as previous accusations against Busfield from 1994 and 2012. The former allegations involved a 17-year-old extra from the film ‘Little Big League’, who claimed that Busfield assaulted her. Although he denied these claims and attempted a countersuit for extortion, the matter ended with a settlement. The second incident in 2012 involved a 28-year-old woman who alleged inappropriate conduct in a cinema. The case did not lead to formal charges due to a lack of evidence.
“I didn’t go into my relationship blind. I’m neither naive nor am I complicit,” Gilbert asserted. She emphasized that she had discussions with Busfield regarding these past allegations. “I talked to him about it, I asked him questions, and I heard his side of the story — which nobody has ever heard — which is the truth,” she added, indicating that Busfield will eventually share his account when the time is appropriate.
The couple is grappling with the impact of the recent allegations, described by Gilbert as “hell”. She articulated that their lives have been irreversibly altered, noting, “Our life as we knew it is done.” She reflected on the loss of hopes and dreams they once held, suggesting that even if Busfield is exonerated, the societal stigma will linger.
Gilbert defended her husband, insisting that he is “the last person in the world who would hurt a child”. She expressed her deep trust in him, asserting, “No one knows him better than I do. Our marriage has had its ups and downs; we’ve worked through a lot together.” Her faith in Busfield’s character was evident as she highlighted his honourable nature, stressing that she would trust him with the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Busfield himself has also made a public statement regarding the accusations, vehemently denying any wrongdoing. He maintained in a video announcement that he has done nothing wrong and is determined to defend himself against the allegations, expressing confidence that he will be exonerated.
In a follow-up statement made on January 26 through her company, Modern Prairie, Gilbert described the situation as extraordinarily difficult. She noted the importance of prioritising what truly matters and the need for moments of rest amidst the turmoil. This period has prompted her to reflect and recharge, away from the noise surrounding their current situation.
