During a recent conversation at New York’s 92nd Street Y, which was part of a promotional event for the second season of his Apple TV+ series, “Your Friends & Neighbours,” Hamm recounted the incident in detail.

Reflecting on his career before his rise to fame in “Mad Men,” Hamm pointed out the peculiar moment when he was confused for Scottish actor John Hannah. The 55-year-old actor described how he had prepared for an audition requiring a British accent, only to find himself on the receiving end of confusion over his identity.
“It’s a good story,” Hamm said when prompted by podcast host Josh Horowitz to share his experience of being mistaken for another actor. He elaborated that John Hannah, an accomplished actor known for roles in films like “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “The Mummy” series, has little resemblance to him. “He’s a Scotsman, balding, older than me, and really looks nothing remotely like me,” Hamm mentioned, humourously noting that the only similarity they shared was the first syllable of their names.
As he recounted his experience going in for the British audition shortly before achieving widespread recognition with “Mad Men,” Hamm explained that he had performed his lines in what he thought was an impressive British accent. The casting director, he noted, commended him on his work and mistakenly believed he was from the UK. “I said, ‘That’s because I am not. But it’s nice that you think that I am because my English accent is so good,’” he joked.
However, the tide turned when the casting director informed Hamm that the role required him to be a UK citizen. When he clarified his nationality, the woman quickly called for assistance, announcing, “Jon’s not a citizen of the UK.” The casting team then revealed their mix-up, thinking he was John Hannah. Hamm recalled the moment with a sense of light-hearted embarrassment: “I walked out with my tail between my legs,” he reflected.
The actor’s anecdote provided humorous insight into the sometimes chaotic world of auditions, especially for Americans trying to break into roles that require British accents. John Hannah, he clarified, was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, which made the confusion even more bewildering.

While he mentioned several standout moments from “Mad Men,” he highlighted an experience from the 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” This particular scene left him in awe, recalling how he was greeted with open arms by Tom Cruise against the backdrop of a massive American flag.
“There’s a four-story American flag to my left, and Tom Cruise walking toward me in Maverick gear, with a giant smile,” Hamm described the scene. He continued to express the surreal nature of being a part of such a culturally significant film that had been a pivotal experience for him as a young boy.
Expressing his excitement about being on the set, Hamm said, “Top Gun, to me, as a 14-year-old [growing up] in St. Louis, Mo., was more than a movie. It was a religion, I guess.” He reminisced about how overwhelming it was to witness the film’s magnitude firsthand and to realise that he was part of a project he had idolised for years.
