A recent incident near Fiji’s Monuriki Island has drawn attention after a Blue Lagoon Cruises ship ran aground on a reef, prompting the swift rescue of passengers. The cruise line confirmed that the mishap occurred on April 4, with investigations indicating that a severe weather squall was responsible for the vessel’s anchor dragging into the reef.

In a statement released to the media, Blue Lagoon Cruises pointed out that despite calm conditions at the time the ship anchored, a sudden squall struck, creating adverse weather that ultimately led the vessel to become grounded. The National Weather Service describes a squall as a short burst of strong winds characterised by increased wind speed.
At the time of the incident, approximately 30 passengers were aboard the cruise ship, accompanied by an equal number of crew members. Thankfully, all individuals on board were reported safe, and no injuries were sustained.
Following the ship’s grounding, those on board were evacuated in an orderly fashion, taking their luggage with them. They were subsequently transported back to Port Denarau via a “large fast ferry.” The cruise line has arranged accommodations for these guests at local Denarau hotels, ensuring their comfort during this unexpected turn of events.
In their statement, Blue Lagoon Cruises expressed gratitude towards their guests, who communicated their appreciation for the swift emergency response. “No guests or crew were injured, and many were thankful for our response,” the company noted.
Moving forward, the cruise company has prioritised environmental safety, outlining their commitment to addressing any potential risks resulting from the incident. Efforts are underway to devise a recovery plan for the ship, although current forecasts suggest poor weather conditions may hinder these operations.
Fiji Meteorological Services issued warnings of heavy rain, flash floods, and an approaching tropical cyclone in the region. With forecasts indicating continued rainy weather until April 10, the potential for complications in the recovery process remains high.
The cruise ship had been on a seven-day expedition, with Monuriki Island being the first stop on their itinerary. This location is notably recognised as the filming site of the famous 2000 survival drama, “Cast Away,” featuring Tom Hanks as a FedEx analyst stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. Tourists often participate in activities at the site, including visits to filming locations and themed dinners hosted by the ship’s captain.
