Jay O. Rothman, the president of the University of Wisconsin System, is facing mounting pressure from the Board of Regents to resign from his position. Rothman, who took up the presidency in June 2022, has publicly resisted these calls, asserting that he has not been given any valid reasoning for the board’s apparent loss of confidence in his leadership.

In a letter addressed to Amy Bogost, the chair of the Board of Regents, Rothman detailed a meeting held on March 21, where Bogost allegedly instructed him to resign or risk termination. Rothman stated that when he sought clarification regarding the board’s discontent, Bogost indicated that the perspectives of individual regents differed without providing substantive reasons for their decision.

Rothman expressed his refusal to resign based on principle, commenting, “I am not prepared… to submit my resignation.” He highlighted various achievements during his presidency, including securing the largest budget increase for the University of Wisconsin in over 20 years. This achievement, he believes, underscores his commitment to the institution’s mission and objectives.

In a subsequent communication addressed to board members Ashok Rai and Jack Salzwedel, Rothman reiterated his stance against resignation and requested clarity on their loss of confidence in his leadership. According to Rothman, he received no response to his inquiries, leading him to suspect that the board had already predetermined their stance without justifiable cause.
