Former reality star Jen Shah has revealed the challenging journey she and her husband, Sharrieff “Coach” Shah, have faced in their marriage during her time in prison. The couple, who have been married since 1994 and have two sons, recently opened up about their struggles and the strength of their bond in an interview with PEOPLE magazine.

Jen, 52, was arrested in March 2021 and later pled guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud as part of a telemarketing scheme that defrauded numerous individuals across the United States. After serving two years and nine months in a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, she was released in December 2025 and is currently under home confinement.

Reflecting on the state of their relationship before her imprisonment, Jen admitted that she and Sharrieff, now 55, were nearing divorce. “We were separated and going towards a divorce because I don’t want our relationship to look like, ‘Oh, it’s all perfect.’ We put in hard work to get there,” she revealed. She attributed their struggles to personal losses, including the deaths of her grandmother, father, and aunt, which contributed to a deepening sense of grief and depression during a tumultuous period.
Despite these challenges, Jen stated that the ordeal ultimately brought her family closer together. “My family has come closer through all of this,” she told PEOPLE. “My marriage is stronger than it’s ever been, and my children and I, our family unit as a whole, is just closer than we’ve ever been.”
Sharrieff has played a pivotal role in Jen’s life during these trying times. She described him as her “rock”, noting that he has remained steadfast throughout her legal troubles. “Most people would have run away… I’m so grateful and so blessed that my husband and my children were there for me,” she shared, referring to their sons, Shariff Jr. and Omar.
In a candid moment during her time in prison, Jen requested her family to write letters detailing the impact of her actions. She expressed the importance of understanding the hurt she had caused them and how it was necessary for her healing process. Although her sons hesitated, concerned about hurting her feelings, Jen emphasised that these conversations were essential for moving forward. “When I got the letters, it was one of the biggest turning points in my healing process,” she said, reflecting on the emotional weight of the correspondence.
The impact letters led to significant discussions between Jen and her family. “There were a lot of tears, because that was hard. But I needed to hear it,” she commented. This raw honesty, she believes, has been integral to their journey toward healing and reconciliation as a family.
Jen also acknowledged her ongoing efforts to amend her relationships with her husband and children. She expressed remorse for missing pivotal moments in their lives due to her absence, such as graduations and prom events. “As a mother and a wife, I do apologise still,” she noted, revealing her deep sense of guilt over her past decisions.
Throughout their struggles, the couple’s shared faith has provided them with strength and support. Jen emphasised the sanctity of marriage and the belief that navigating difficulties together is essential. “The hard thing is to stay together. You have to put real work in,” she stated.
In closing, Jen Shah’s journey illustrates the complexities of family dynamics, challenges, and the resilience that can arise from adversity. With their relationship now on firmer ground, she and Sharrieff continue to navigate the road ahead together, focusing on love, understanding, and growth.
