Dad of 2 Leaves Dentist’s Office with Bleeding Gums. A Month Later, He Had 3 Limbs and His Hand Amputated

A Texas father of two, Davon Vanterpool, has faced a harrowing health crisis following what was supposed to be a routine dental appointment. The 34-year-old has undergone the amputation of three limbs and his right hand due to severe complications arising from a dental infection that led to septic shock.

On December 29, 2022, Vanterpool attended the dentist for a regular examination. His partner, Alicia Wilder, observed that his gums were significantly inflamed and bleeding after the procedure. “The dentist was poking around and it caused his gums to bleed,” she explained. Following the consultation, Vanterpool returned home to Denton County, Texas, where his condition rapidly deteriorated.

Just 45 minutes after Alicia left for errands, she returned to find Davon shivering uncontrollably. “He was shaking, saying he felt cold and couldn’t stop,” Alicia recounted. Alarmed by his distress, she quickly took him to the hospital. Upon arrival, Davon’s health continued to decline, and he fell into septic shock — a life-threatening response to infection. Ultimately, he required life support after his heart stopped.

Sepsis can sometimes originate from dental infections, wherein bacteria seep into the bloodstream through compromised gum tissue. Alicia believes this is what happened to Davon as he had been otherwise healthy prior to the appointment. “He was just a normal, active dad,” she said, reflecting on their life before the incident.

Tragically, Davon developed purpura fulminans, a severe and fast-moving condition that can lead to tissue death. This further complicated his situation as necrosis set in, causing his hands to become black and hardened. Despite Alicia’s desperate attempts to stimulate blood flow through massage, doctors noted that the removal of dead tissue spurred another episode of septic shock.

On January 23, 2023, in a desperate bid to save his life, medical professionals performed extensive amputations. The drastic measures included the removal of his entire right leg, his right hand, and parts of both his left leg and forearm. “I was terrified and shocked to have to go through this,” Alicia relayed, grappling with the emotional toll of the situation.

Despite the traumatic challenges, the family remains resolute in their support of Davon. Alicia described him as “loving and positive,” even amid adversity. “He gives me thumbs up and smiles, trying to stay positive,” she said, underscoring his perseverance in the face of hardship.

To assist with his ongoing recovery and the adjustments required for living without limbs, the family has established a GoFundMe campaign. This initiative aims to provide Davon with the necessary resources for care, as well as to accommodate their home and vehicle for accessibility purposes.

Alicia is in awe of Davon’s strength, noting, “Even in critical condition, he participates in therapy, pushing through various challenges.” She highlighted his quiet resilience and determination, suggesting it will play a significant role in his long-term recovery journey. “I’m here to support him every step of the way,” she affirmed.
