This incident unfolded at Hermosa Beach Pier, where 20-year-old Kevin Phan found himself in an unanticipated situation as he attempted to free a young shark entangled in his fishing line.

Witnesses were left astounded as the unfolding rescue was captured on video. Among those observing was local resident Alexandra Garry, who later shared the footage that has since gone viral. The incident took place on 1st April and saw a crowd gather as Phan, donned in minimal clothing, displayed quick thinking in a tense situation.
In the footage, Phan is seen skillfully reeling in his line before swiftly using scissors to sever the connection to the struggling shark. Once freed, the fish thrashed about briefly before making its way back into the ocean, garnering applause from the onlookers who appreciated Phan’s prompt action. Garry highlighted Phan’s bravery, noting, “He definitely deserves the praise. It’s not every day you need to strip to your underwear in front of a crowd to go help a great white shark, and he didn’t hesitate!”

“I wasn’t intentionally targeting white sharks. I know the rules of California state law; you can’t target them at all,” he stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Phan, who has been fishing for five years, described his reaction as instinctual, saying, “When I saw the great white, my brain just clicked into action, and I tried to free it as quickly as I could.” Thankfully, both Phan and the shark emerged from the incident without harm.

Gauna explained, “The only time I ever get a little bit worried about a juvenile white shark possibly hurting somebody inadvertently is when there’s fishing activity going on next to swimmers.” He recalled a concerning incident from 2014 involving another great white shark which bit a swimmer close to Manhattan Beach Pier after being hooked by a fisherman. During the struggle to reel the shark in, the commotion attracted the attention of swimmers, culminating in a bite incident.
