William Shatner, the legendary actor best known for his role in the iconic series *Star Trek*, has taken to social media to alert fans about the prevalence of fake news concerning him, particularly on Facebook. The actor, now 95, voiced his concerns over misleading articles that exploit his image and identity for profit.
On April 2, Shatner made a statement on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), expressing his dismay at a Facebook page dubbed “The Beanstalk Functions Group.” He accused the page of spreading false narratives, including alarming claims about his health status and personal conflicts. “They’ve created stories claiming I have stage 4 brain cancer and that I am in some sort of confrontation with Erika Kirk,” he remarked, adding that the purported tales sensationalised his life while capitalising on artificial intelligence-generated imagery of him.
Shatner revealed that he first intended to issue his warning the day prior, but was hesitant due to the timing coinciding with April Fools’ Day. After criticising the page for disseminating such harmful misinformation, he also indicated that he had submitted a report to Facebook regarding its content, though the platform has yet to take action to remove the page or its posts.
In his social media posts, Shatner shared screenshots of the AI-generated articles, which included outrageous fabrications about his health condition and his supposed struggles with illness. “These stories are not only untrue but are deceptively presented in a way that has convinced many of my fans to share their concern for me,” he explained. “It’s disheartening to see how easily misinformation can spread and profit at the expense of an individual’s reputation.”
