The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released distressing images and videos pertaining to the tragic death of renowned chef Anne Burrell, who passed away at the age of 55 on June 17, 2025. The released materials, which include photographs from the scene of her death, depict numerous pills scattered on the bathroom floor alongside various medication bottles and cigarette remnants.

The NYPD shared these materials with PEOPLE on March 31, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding Burrell’s passing. The images highlight a dish filled with multiple pills located near the toilet, which has drawn considerable attention from the public and media. Bottles of common medications such as Advil, Zyrtec, and Motrin were found lying on the floor, alongside a ValuMeds allergy-relief antihistamine.
In addition to the images, the NYPD provided video footage of Burrell and her husband, Stuart Claxton, arriving home on the night of her untimely death. The recordings show the couple walking through the exterior gate of their Brooklyn apartment complex and later entering the lobby. In one clip, Burrell is seen leaning against a wall while they await the elevator, appearing contemplative and distant during their last moments together.

A separate segment of footage features the couple in the lift, where Burrell stands quietly with her back against the wall, seemingly disengaged from Claxton, who gestures and speaks to her. There is a noticeable moment when she appears ready to respond but ultimately chooses not to, a poignant reminder of the struggles she faced before her death.
Earlier reports from the NYPD revealed that a suicide note was discovered in Burrell’s primary bedroom following her passing. Investigators also found journal entries characterised as “suicidal” on a bed in the same room. According to the police report, Claxton noticed that the bed was unusually made, which alarmed him, prompting the search through their apartment that led to the grim discovery.

Claxton recounted the harrowing moment when he found Burrell on the bathroom floor surrounded by over-the-counter medication. He attempted to revive her by shaking her and calling her name, followed by a prompt call to emergency services when she failed to respond. In his statements to the police, Claxton expressed disbelief at the situation, noting that Burrell had never previously shown any signs of suicidal tendencies or had ever spoken about such thoughts.
The medical examiner’s office later ruled Burrell’s death as a suicide, attributing it to “acute intoxication” resulting from a combination of several substances, including diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine. The findings highlighted the dangers of these compounds, including antihistamines and alcohol, alongside other medications commonly used to treat ADHD.
In a heartfelt statement released after her passing, Burrell’s family described her as a “beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend,” emphasizing that her joyous presence brought light to all who knew her. They remembered her warmth and spirit, which resonated with countless fans around the world, stating that even in her absence, her love and kindness would endure eternally.
Burrell had met Claxton in 2018 through the dating app Bumble, and the couple married three years later on October 16, 2021. She is survived not only by Claxton but also by his son, Javier, her mother Marlene, her sister Jane and her children, and her brother Ben, who remain heartbroken by their loss.
