The iconic rock band Journey is currently in the thick of a significant farewell tour, yet lead singer Arnel Pineda has recently revealed that he contemplated leaving the group on two separate occasions due to personal challenges he was facing. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, the 58-year-old vocalist admitted that his struggles were severe enough for him to express a desire to retire from the band, but such sentiments were met with silence from his bandmates.

Pineda, who has fronted Journey since 2007 after being discovered on YouTube by guitarist Neal Schon, has found fame with the legendary band known for their anthems like “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Open Arms.” However, despite the initial thrill of joining one of the world’s most renowned rock acts, the pressures of extensive touring and personal issues, including a contentious divorce, have weighed heavily on him.

In his interview, Pineda conveyed his frustration. “I told Neal and Jonathan that I wanted to retire because of my personal problems. No answer,” he explained. This lack of communication appears to have compounded his feelings of isolation within the band, especially as he felt he was not consulted on the extensive touring schedule that includes 60 shows planned for the U.S. as part of the Final Frontier tour and an additional 40 dates in the following year.
Pineda noted that his deteriorating health and inability to adjust to colder climates made him concerned about his capacity to continue touring. “My body has changed, and I can’t take the cold weather anymore,” he remarked. Despite these concerns, the band has moved forward, with Schon asserting that Pineda is obligated to participate due to their contractual agreements.
The singer’s personal turmoil stems significantly from his divorce from Cherry Pineda, with whom he has two children. In recent court documents, Pineda accused Cherry of infidelity, allegations that she denies. The proceedings have also revealed a back-and-forth exchange of accusations regarding abusive behaviour, which has only heightened Pineda’s emotional strain.
“My personal problems took a toll on me. That’s why I wanted to prioritise my family,” he stated, indicating a deep desire to mend his familial relations amidst his professional commitments. He compared his situation to that of former frontman Steve Perry, who had to make sacrifices for his health, suggesting that both he and Perry experienced burdens related to their positions in the band.
Despite the personal challenges and disagreements with his bandmates, Pineda expressed a deep sense of gratitude and respect for them. “I love the guys. I respect them so much. I will remain grateful for what they’ve done for me,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to the band even amid his struggles.
Interestingly, during a performance in Brazil earlier this year, Pineda solicited feedback from fans about his vocal performance, openly suggesting they could vote him out if they were dissatisfied. Schon responded positively, encouraging Pineda and urging him not to be swayed by negative comments online.
As Journey continues its farewell tour, Pineda’s heartfelt reflections serve as a reminder of the personal battles that can lie beneath the surface of fame. It remains to be seen how these factors will affect the remainder of the tour and Pineda’s future with the band, but his commitment and gratitude towards his bandmates appear steadfast, at least for now. Journey’s ongoing legacy and Pineda’s pivotal role will undoubtedly continue to be topics of interest as they navigate this complex chapter together.
