The incident took place on March 3, when Honey was performing her routine patrol around the family’s farm, which includes two horses and over 60 chickens. Honey’s owner, Denise Martinez, recounted the moment she discovered something was amiss. Hours after the confrontation, she found Honey in the driveway, battling significant injuries and a swollen face. Martinez explained that the family sensed something was terribly wrong, spurred by security footage and tracks that revealed the true nature of Honey’s late-night vigil.

Española Humane, the nonprofit shelter that provided medical care for Honey, shared the details of her injuries on social media, stating that they were “catastrophic.” Honey suffered from a severe degloving wound extending from her neck to her face, in addition to deep puncture wounds, substantial bruising and swelling, and other lacerations that spoke to her valiant struggle against the bear. “She took the hits so no one else would have to, and she drove a predator away from everything she loves,” the shelter posted.
Denise conveyed her astonishment at Honey’s resolve, stating that the extent of the injuries made her doubt whether Honey would pull through. “Her wounds did not look like something Honey would be able to overcome,” she remarked, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Realising the urgency of Honey’s condition, they quickly transported her to the urgent care clinic operated by Española Humane.
Honey’s daughter, Leanna Martinez, described finding her beloved pet in distress, revealing the harrowing sight of her injuries. The family of healthcare professionals understood the critical nature of Honey’s wounds, recognising that immediate treatment was essential. Fortunately, despite the dire circumstances, Honey’s fighting spirit prevailed, and she is now on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery.
Since the bear encounter, Honey has been receiving medication and ongoing care at Española Humane. Her backstory is just as impressive, as she has previously survived Parvo and a confrontation with a porcupine, leaving her partially blind. Denise affectionately referred to Honey as their “little saviour,” commending her protective instincts. “She risked her life to save not just the coop, but her family, from that bear,” she said.
Española Humane highlighted the significance of Honey’s actions, stating that she stood as a barrier between her family and the perilous threat posed by the bear, regardless of the potential cost to herself. The shelter described her tenacity as a mix of love from her family, community support, and what they affectionately dubbed “Honey Badger badassery.”
The tale of Honey has inspired many, drawing attention not only to her bravery but also to the bond between pets and their families. As Honey continues her recovery, many in the community are rallying to show their support for the remarkable dog who demonstrated that loyalty and courage can transcend physical limits, reminding everyone of the extraordinary lengths to which animals will go to protect their loved ones.
