A touching farewell was recently captured in a TikTok video by North Carolinian Faith Turner, documenting the final day of her cherished 12-year-old dog, Alice. The poignant clip, shared on social media, quickly resonated with a broad audience, drawing attention to the powerful bond between pets and their owners.

Alice, a rescue dog, had been a beloved companion to Turner and her family since she was a puppy. Described as a source of unwavering emotional support, Alice had a unique way of sensing her family’s feelings. “If I was sad,” Turner recalled, “she would run up to me and start licking the tears off my face. She always knew.” This deep connection has been a source of comfort for the entire family, particularly during trying times.

However, Alice’s health took a swift decline after she received a devastating cancer diagnosis in mid-March. Turner vividly remembers the moment when her mother called to inform her that Alice was dying. Rushing home from work, she took Alice for immediate veterinary care, leading to the discovery of severe infections and an inflamed liver. Despite attempts at treatment, further examinations suggested a grim prognosis. “They told us to just give her the best love we could,” Turner recounted, adding that Alice was expected to decline significantly.

Faced with the heart-wrenching decision of euthanasia, the family chose to spend the next week indulging Alice in her favourite activities. Turner noted that it was essential for them to create joyful memories during her last days. Unfortunately, by the end of this week, Alice was unable to walk due to severe swelling, but that did not stop the family from planning special outings.
On her final day, they decided to take Alice for a drive, allowing her to enjoy the feeling of wind against her face. A notable moment captured in the TikTok showed Alice sitting in the passenger seat, soaking in the breeze. They made a stop at their local Starbucks, where, in a gesture of kindness, the staff provided not only a pup cup filled with whipped cream but also cake pops without charge, recognising the special circumstances.
Adding to this day of honouring Alice, Turner also took her for a gentle ‘walk’ in a wagon so she could still feel the sun on her fur. “She loved being outside, just lying in the sun like it was her favourite place in the world,” Turner shared, demonstrating her desire to keep Alice in a state of joy, surrounded by elements that brought her comfort.
Throughout her illness, Alice’s affectionate personality remained apparent. Turner described her as a uniquely perceptive dog, capable of sensing storms hours in advance. The comfort she provided to her owners during such moments underscored the depth of their relationship. “When I held her close, she would slowly calm down,” said Turner, noting how Alice needed that sense of safety in her final days.
Despite Alice’s tender nature, Turner recalled her pet as having an endearingly quirky personality, akin to that of a cat. Alice had an unusual way of grooming herself and could even manage to trim her own nails. Turner’s fondness for Alice was evident as she reflected, “She had the funniest little personality,” highlighting just how special Alice was among pets.
Alice was humanely euthanised one week after her diagnosis, surrounded by her loved ones, including another family dog. The loss has been profoundly felt within the Turner household, with the surviving dog displaying signs of distress, such as looking out of the window in sorrow.
In the wake of Alice’s passing, Turner is finding solace in her other pet, a cat named Beans, who seemed to instinctively understand the need for comfort. “I was crying, and he just laid on my chest purring,” Turner noted, expressing how Beans provided immediate emotional support during her time of grief.
As Turner begins to navigate life without Alice, she acknowledges the void left by her loyal companion. “There will never be another like her,” she said, encapsulating the immense gap that Alice’s absence has created. With her memories and the love they shared, Faith Turner continues to honour Alice’s legacy, a testament to the enduring bond between humans and their pets.
