In the trailer, Mortensen, who is known for his tumultuous history, candidly admits to having made “bad choices” in his past. This self-reflection hints at the personal challenges he has faced and sets the tone for what viewers might expect from the competition. In another intriguing interaction from the trailer, Mortensen engages in a discussion with Gleb Savchenko, a professional dancer from “Dancing with the Stars”. Savchenko jokingly labels himself and Mortensen as “bad guys”, creating a moment that underscores their edgy personas.
Joining Mortensen in this unconventional showdown are other polarising figures, including Anna Delvey—famed as the inspiration behind the Netflix series “Inventing Anna”—and reality stars Juliette Porter and Demi Engemann from “Siesta Keys” and “Mormon Wives”, respectively. The competition will also feature WWE star Saraya Bevis, as well as several former contestants from “The Bachelor” and “Love Island”, creating a diverse lineup of personalities from different entertainment sectors.

Nonetheless, Mortensen’s participation in the series comes amid ongoing allegations stemming from domestic assault investigations involving him and his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Frankie Paul. The Draper City Police Department initiated an investigation on 23 February after receiving a report of an alleged domestic violence incident involving Mortensen. The report indicates that Mortensen claimed there were incidents of physical assault that included “grabbing, scratching, shoving, and striking”.

Complicating matters further, the West Jordan Police Department has launched a separate investigation following a report filed by Mortensen regarding a different altercation with Paul. This investigation has received additional attention as Mortensen reportedly submitted related video evidence, now being evaluated by authorities.
On 19 March, Mortensen sought a protective order against Paul, with a hearing scheduled for 7 April. This legal action follows a highly publicised altercation in which Paul was accused of attacking Mortensen in 2023. The incident, which reportedly occurred in front of Paul’s young daughter, drew significant media coverage after a video surfaced. In the clip, Paul can be seen shouting and seemingly assaulting Mortensen, leading to increased scrutiny surrounding her behaviour and the couple’s past relationship.
Following the release of the video, ABC promptly cancelled Paul’s participation in a pre-recorded season of “The Bachelorette”, which was set to debut just days later. Previously, a representative for Paul defended her actions, suggesting that the video was strategically edited to distort the full context of the situation. Mortensen responded strongly, labelling the claims against him as baseless and expressing his dismay at the continuous allegations.
Adding to the complex situation, Paul pleaded guilty in abeyance to charges of aggravated assault related to the 2023 incident, paving the way for other charges to be dismissed. This legal outcome highlights the turbulent nature of their relationship and raises questions about its future trajectory amid ongoing investigations.
As “Unwell Winter Games” prepares to debut, the juxtaposition of Mortensen’s competitive participation alongside the backdrop of serious legal challenges presents a unique narrative for audiences. With the infusion of reality television dynamics and the personal tribulations facing its contestants, the series is poised to offer a compelling viewing experience marked by both entertainment and controversy. As the premiere date approaches, many will undoubtedly be eager to see how these complex relationships evolve on screen.
