Joseph Duggar has been released from custody in Arkansas, sparking inquiries regarding his potential extradition to Florida, where he faces serious allegations of lewd and lascivious behaviour involving a minor. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Duggar waived his right to an extradition hearing a week prior to his release on 20 March. He was detained following charges filed by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office in Florida on 18 March. The nature of these charges stems from accusations of sexual abuse against a nine-year-old girl during a family holiday in Panama City Beach in 2020.
Despite his release from the Arkansas facility, officials from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office have remained tight-lipped, declining to confirm whether Duggar has been extradited. He is not presently listed as an inmate in Florida, and there has been no formal record of his case since his release.
The allegations against Duggar are particularly serious. An affidavit for an arrest warrant indicates that he allegedly confessed to the abuse on two separate occasions—first to the victim’s father and later during a conversation with both the father and a detective from the Tontitown Police Department (TPD). The affidavit details that, during a forensic interview with the now-14-year-old girl, she claimed Duggar sexually assaulted her while they were at a beach rental, describing how he attempted to shield his actions with a blanket.
As it stands, Duggar faces charges that include lewd and lascivious behaviour involving a minor under the age of 12, as well as lewd and lascivious behaviour perpetrated by someone over the age of 18. These charges are expected to be formally filed when he is arraigned in Florida.
In addition to the charges in Florida, Duggar and his wife, Kendra, are embroiled in other legal troubles. They face unrelated charges stemming from a search of their home conducted by the TPD and agents from the Arkansas Department of Human Services on 19 March. Both Joseph and Kendra have been charged with four misdemeanours, including false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. Kendra has been released on bail, while both are scheduled to appear in an Arkansas courtroom on 29 April.
Joseph Duggar, prominent through his appearances on the family reality series franchise aired by TLC since the age of 13, has become a figure of public scrutiny.
