Souleyman Bah, a 27-year-old father of three from the UK, has garnered widespread attention for his remarkable ability to navigate the challenges of parenting while living with vision impairment. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that progressively damages the retina, Bah has managed to redefine his experience as a blind father in a society that often sees disability as a hurdle.
Since his diagnosis at the age of five, Bah has had to adapt to his deteriorating vision. He describes his sight as akin to “looking through a tiny pinhole,” with only about 10% vision remaining. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to make the most of his abilities, particularly in his role as a father. “I am happy with what I can see right now,” he shared. “It is enough for me to know my partner and my three children well before I lose sight completely.”

Bah’s journey into parenthood began at 24 when he met his partner, Saskia Symington, following his participation in the UK dating show *The Undateables*. While he had anticipated the challenges that would come with being a blind dad, he was excited to start a family early, believing it was essential to see his children grow and create lasting memories while he still could.
Reflecting on the birth of his first daughter, Tallulah, Bah admitted to feeling apprehensive. “There were moments of fear of the unknown,” he confessed, especially concerning the practicalities of caring for a newborn. He faced an array of questions, feeling unsure about how to manage everyday tasks such as changing diapers or going for walks with his baby.

In an effort to address these unknowns and share his journey, Bah turned to social media, creating content that documents his experiences. He uses platforms like TikTok and Instagram under the handle @blinddaduk to connect with others who might be facing similar parenting challenges. Through his posts, he aims to dismantle the stigma surrounding disability and parenting, proving that being a blind dad does not preclude one from being a loving and competent parent.
Bah has recently gone viral for his resourceful techniques in caring for his twins, Nemaya and Angelo. He explained that he uses his other senses—such as recognising the different tones of their cries and the textures of their hair—to distinguish between them. He has also developed innovative ways to tackle everyday responsibilities like preparing bottles and changing diapers, underscoring his adaptability.
“I’ve learned that it’s okay to accept when I can’t do something,” Bah remarked. “Asking for help doesn’t equate to being incapable. My philosophy revolves around putting in 100% effort into the tasks I can manage to help lighten the load in our family.”
Throughout his parenting journey, Bah finds solace in the love and joy shared within his family. He looks forward to each morning, relishing the sight of his children’s smiling faces gathered around the breakfast table. “The most fulfilling part of my parenting journey is seeing my family happy and feeling grateful that the dream I envisioned eight years ago has finally come true,” he expressed.
Bah’s message to those who may be struggling with similar circumstances is one of empowerment. “Your potential exceeds the barriers in front of you,” he encourages. “You should believe in yourself more than society often allows. While you may need to seek unconventional solutions and support, remember that your instincts as a parent are innate, and you should never shy away from expressing that.”
Through his compelling narrative and candid reflections, Souleyman Bah is not just redefining what it means to be a blind parent but is also inspiring a wider community to embrace their unique capabilities. His story serves as a powerful reminder that love, determination, and resilience can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
