Thousands of Pizza and Bread Products Recalled Due to Metal Fragment Contamination. Here’s What You Need to Know

A significant food recall has been announced due to contamination concerns involving metal fragments found in several ready-to-eat pizza and bread products. The recall, which has been set in motion by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects thousands of consumers across the United States.

The recall was initiated voluntarily by food manufacturer Bakkavor on January 19, as confirmed by a statement from the FDA. It was later classified as a Class II recall on March 23, indicating that the implicated products could potentially cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the FDA’s guidelines.

Among the products affected are the HelloFresh Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza and Trader Joe’s Focaccia Bread Roasted Tomato & Parm. The recall stems from an issue linked to slow-roasted tomatoes supplied by an ingredient vendor, which were discovered to possibly contain metal fragments.

In total, over 25,000 cases of various products are impacted, which bear multiple brand names including HelloFresh, Frederik’s by Meijer, Fresh & Simple, Harris Teeter, and Trader Joe’s. Distribution of these items has reached consumers in ten states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia. Many of these products have also been shipped directly to customers through HelloFresh’s delivery service.

The recall specifically highlights four lot numbers for HelloFresh pizzas and a wider array of focaccia bread products. The use-by dates for the affected items span from April 27, 2026, to October 15, 2026. Notably, the lot numbers for the HelloFresh pizza include those with use-by dates of June 29 and June 30, 2026, as well as September 4 and September 5, 2026.

Additionally, focaccia products from various brands have their own designated lot numbers and use-by dates. For instance, the Frederik’s by Meijer focaccia has use-by dates ranging from April 27, 2026, to August 3, 2026, while those from Trader Joe’s carry dates up to August 19, 2026. The FDA has advised consumers who possess any of the recalled items to either dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase for a refund. Although there have been no widespread reports of injuries related to this recall, the agency is monitoring the situation closely as it continues to unfold.

Bakkavor has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the incident. As the situation progresses, consumers are urged to remain vigilant and stay updated on the recall to ensure their safety.
