In a heartbreaking yet inspiring tale, Ashleigh Smith, a 36-year-old mother of two, has opened up about her difficult journey following a diagnosis of one of the rarest forms of cancer. She discovered her condition only after years of experiencing numerous health issues that were frequently dismissed by various medical professionals.

Smith’s ordeal began with debilitating symptoms, including heart palpitations, persistent stomach pain, and extreme fatigue. She sought help from numerous practitioners, including general practitioners, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and even an osteopath, all to no avail. “I was often told my health complaints were linked to anxiety or previous injuries. The endoscopy for my stomach pain returned inconclusive results,” she explained.
The turning point in Smith’s diagnosis occurred when she noticed a lump on the left side of her neck, which she initially thought were swollen lymph nodes. A subsequent ultrasound revealed the presence of tumours, leading her to a shocking diagnosis of bilateral carotid body tumours, a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer. “When my doctor informed me about the tumours and their rarity, I felt a mix of confusion and anger,” she remarked, reflecting on her emotional turmoil upon learning her condition.

Initially, Smith’s doctor reassured her, estimating a low probability of the tumours being malignant. However, during further examinations, it was revealed that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and spine. “It was at this point I truly understood the gravity of the situation,” she recalled, noting the moment she was informed of her cancer status by an oncologist.
Despite the challenges posed by her diagnosis, Smith has persevered and maintained a strong work ethic. To cope with the financial burden of her treatment, she worked long hours as a food delivery driver, sometimes alongside her husband, after tending to her children’s needs. “With mounting medical costs and limited leave, I took on the additional job to generate income ahead of my surgery,” she explained, highlighting the toll the situation took on her family dynamics.
The emotional impact on her children, aged 10 and 12, has been profound. “To them, cancer meant death,” Smith shared, referencing a recent loss in their lives. To alleviate their fears, she reassured them about her situation, but admitted her daughter expressed longing for a time when she was healthier. “I try only to share the necessary information, allowing them to assist more around the house while balancing their sense of normalcy,” she said.
Smith underwent surgery to remove one of the tumours in November 2025, which she described as generally successful despite her having to return to work only ten days post-operation due to financial pressures. She soon opted for radiation treatment, scheduled over the holiday period, which left her feeling drained. “The treatment was meant to bring relief, but radiation resulted in further realisation of how ill I was,” she noted, acknowledging the slow-growing nature of her condition but emphasising the need for immediate relief from constant pain.
Tragedy struck once more when another surgery failed to remove a larger tumour as anticipated. The risks associated had not been clearly conveyed to her, leading to a tumultuous experience as she faced the unknown outcomes related to her speech and swallowing capabilities. “The implications of that procedure changed the course of my life profoundly,” Smith recounted.
Despite the ongoing struggles, including severe fatigue and various complications after surgery, there is a resilience that defines Smith. “I’ve had to cope one day at a time, as uncertainty looms over my future,” she explained, reflecting on how personal and family plans have fallen apart due to her health crisis.
Through it all, Smith has found strength in the support from her family, friends, and colleagues, whose kindness has helped keep her spirits alive. “I feel very fortunate to have such a strong support network,” she added.
Her message to others facing similar battles is clear: “Trust your instincts about your health. Know your body better than anyone else. Don’t hesitate to seek second opinions or challenge medical advice.”
As she continues to navigate cancer treatment and its impact on her life, Smith’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of perseverance, self-advocacy, and the power of community support during harrowing times.
