Boy, 8, Praised as a ‘Hero’ After Rushing to Help Neighbors Escape an Apartment Fire

An eight-year-old boy from Colorado has been hailed as a local hero after his quick thinking and bravery helped several families evacuate from a fire that broke out at their apartment complex. Joaquin Guillen’s prompt actions on Saturday, March 14, enabled residents of the Union Heights Apartment complex in Colorado Springs to escape unharmed.

Joaquin was riding his bike outside when he first spotted the smoke. It wasn’t long before he noticed flames licking up the side of the building. “The fire was going up to the third floor… and it looked like it was getting bigger and bigger,” he recounted in an interview with local news outlet KOAA. Concerned by what he witnessed, Joaquin rushed home to alert his father. “I told my dad there’s a fire. I’m not joking this time … because I joke a lot,” he added, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Initially, Cody Guillen, Joaquin’s father, didn’t take his son seriously. “I didn’t really think anything of it… until I stepped outside, heard the crackling, and saw it,” he said. Realising the gravity of the situation, Cody promptly called emergency services. The two then began going door-to-door within the complex, warning their neighbours about the impending danger.

Joaquin urged those inside to evacuate, showcasing commendable poise for his age. “They tell us kids can be heroes. When you see a fire, you tell your parents,” he advised. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries from the incident, and the Colorado Springs Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the blaze.

The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with neighbours, including Kimberly Reid, praising Joaquin for his valour. “He’s a real hero,” she stated, emphasising the potential risk to numerous children and pets in the complex at the time. Reid remarked that people need “more kids like you” who exhibit such selflessness in troubling times.

Cody Guillen expressed immense pride in his son, describing the experience as a moment to remember. “I love you,” he told Joaquin, underscoring the deep bond formed through their shared experience. In a moment of reflection, Joaquin stated, “I’m happy that I did it. I saved my family’s life,” encapsulating the innocence and courage that characterise his young age.

Regrettably, the Guillen family was not without their losses as a result of the fire. A GoFundMe campaign launched by Joaquin’s grandmother indicates that they lost both their home and nearly all their possessions. The fundraiser explains that the family managed to escape with only the clothes on their backs, leaving them to confront the daunting task of starting anew from scratch.

The campaign appeals for community support, indicating that the Guillens are facing a harsh reality without essentials such as shelter, food, clothing, and other basic necessities. “We humbly ask for prayers and any financial support you can give to help them secure shelter, food, clothing, and basic necessities as they rebuild their lives,” the fundraiser adds, recognising the challenges the family will encounter moving forward.
