Former President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr Jill Biden, have welcomed two new dogs into their family after adopting them from a rescue organisation in Tennessee. This announcement marks an exciting new chapter following their previous experiences as dog owners.

The couple adopted two black Labrador mixes from the Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary in Mountain City, Tennessee. The animal shelter made the news public in a social media post on March 25, confirming that the dogs were transported to Delaware to join the Biden household.
In their Facebook statement, the shelter expressed their enthusiasm about the adoption, noting, “These two Johnson County pups were adopted together yesterday by the Biden family.” The post humorously added that one of the dogs was very active and seemed “ready to run and play,” making it difficult to capture an ideal photo op.
The team at the Rescue DOG & End of Life Sanctuary highlighted their joy for the dogs, who had once been abandoned, as well as their commitment to finding good homes for all pets, regardless of their owners’ prominence. “We are thrilled for these two pups who were once abandoned on the mountain,” the shelter wrote. “To us, a great home is a great home!”
The Biden family has had a complex history with dogs during their time in the public eye. In 2021, they faced difficulties with their previous German Shepherds, Champ and Major, while living at the White House. Major, who was notably the first rescue dog to reside in the presidential residence, was involved in a biting incident, which led to both dogs being rehomed back to Delaware after their term at the White House.
The Bidens had shared their household with Champ and Major prior to this transition. Champ sadly passed away in June 2021, at which point Major remained until he was also rehomed later that year as a result of behavioral issues. Following these events, a new German Shepherd named Commander joined the family in December 2021. However, Commander was also removed from the White House after being involved in several biting incidents, with discussions surrounding his behaviour continuing to surface.
