A Dalmatian-pointer mix dog who was abandoned at a gas station in Pembroke Park, Florida, has found a loving new home. The rescue, which has captured the hearts of many online, began when Michael Puente and his girlfriend encountered a distressing viral video showing the dog tied to a pole outside the station.

The footage, which garnered significant attention, depicted the young dog struggling in solitude, prompting local residents to alert authorities. Upon arrival, the police ensured the dog was taken to a nearby shelter, Broward County Animal Care, where it could receive the care it urgently needed.

Puente recounted his initial reaction upon seeing the video. “I felt like it was more like a call,” he said, expressing his instinctive urge to assist the abandoned animal. Despite his efforts to locate the dog at the gas station and inquiries with police, he was initially unable to find it. Nevertheless, his determination led him to the animal shelter where the dog had been taken.

“I kept deciding I’m going to keep going and I want to meet him,” Puente insisted. His persistence paid off when he finally met the pup and felt an immediate connection. “I was like, ‘He’s mine,’” he added, highlighting the bond he felt upon their encounter.
Following the adoption approval process, Puente officially brought the dog into his family, giving it a new name: Zenki. The name holds special significance for Puente, as he explained that it represents “first generation” in Japanese culture. He shared, “Zenki is my first generation dog. He’s my first rescue, my first pet.”
Feeling an immediate rapport with Zenki, Puente noted the dog’s assurance in his presence. “He’s with me. He’s throwing his back on me. I think he feels the security. I think he feels safe. Dogs can tell a lot,” he remarked, indicating the comfort and relief the dog appears to have found since being adopted.
The story has resonated with many, serving as a powerful reminder of the responsibilities of pet ownership. Puente urged others not to abandon animals in distressing situations. “There are people out there. You don’t have to leave a dog tied to a pole,” he emphasised, highlighting the importance of compassion and responsibility toward abandoned pets.
As Zenki settles into his new life, Puente is already relishing the companionship his new furry friend brings. Their journey from despair to hope stands as a testament to the impact that love and commitment can have on the lives of animals in need.
