Acclaimed actress Sepideh Moafi has joined the cast of HBO Max’s ‘The Pitt’ for its second season, portraying Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, a determined physician who engages in intense clashes with character Sepideh Moafi’s on-screen counterpart, played by Noah Wyle. Known for her commanding presence, Moafi’s character offers a fresh dynamic to the series as she grapples with the challenges of her profession while embodying compassion for her patients.
Moafi vividly recalls the moment she received the life-changing call about landing her role in the show. At 7 p.m. the night before she was due to leave New York for a weeklong personal-growth retreat, she was informed she had secured the part. “I was elated, and I frantically packed even more, because I was going to be in California for not one week, but eight months,” she revealed in a recent interview. Just two days later, she would start a rigorous “medical boot camp” in preparation for her role in the Emmy-winning drama.
Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, the character Moafi brings to life, is set to temporarily step into the shoes of Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch, portrayed by Noah Wyle, during his three-month sabbatical. Moafi articulates the depth of her character, stating, “She leads with pure intentions, and she’s able to empathise with patients in a very personal way, and yet diagnose and see beyond what’s in front of her.” This multifaceted approach makes the role particularly appealing to the actress, who finds strength in her ability to zoom in on details while also maintaining a broader perspective.
Originally born in Germany to Iranian parents who fled their homeland after the Islamic Revolution, Moafi’s background profoundly shapes her identity and career. “For any refugee family, it’s rarely a choice. The circumstances were so dire that they were forced to leave,” she reflects on her family’s difficult journey from Iran to Turkey and, subsequently, to refugee camps in Germany. She highlights the importance of community in settling in the United States but acknowledges the pain of losing one’s identity in the process.
Motivated by a keen interest in opera from a young age, Moafi pursued her passion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. However, she later grew disillusioned with the lack of emphasis on acting within the program. A pivotal comment from one of her teachers about her acting talent prompted her to explore opportunities outside of singing. This led her to regional productions of Shakespeare and ultimately to an MFA at the University of California, Irvine, where she honed her craft further.
Her professional journey began in earnest in 2013 with a guest appearance on the popular CBS series ‘Blue Bloods.’ This marked the start of a prolific career that would include a starring role in HBO’s ‘The Deuce’ and a significant part in ‘The L Word: Generation Q.’ Reflecting on her experience, Moafi expressed disbelief at her achievements, stating, “I couldn’t believe that I was living this life.”
Though her career has experienced impressive growth, Moafi has not been without challenges. She recounts how her first agent advised her to change her name to fit more conventional expectations in the industry. Undeterred, she chose to remain true to herself, leading to a fulfilling and diverse array of roles.
Beyond her artistic pursuits, Moafi is also committed to social advocacy, particularly for refugees and immigrants, drawing on her personal history. “People want dignity and a free future,” she emphasises, recognising the emotional weight of her background as a powerful motivator. “It is a privilege to be of service,” she adds, highlighting her desire to use her platform for positive change.
Looking ahead, Moafi is set to star in Off-Broadway’s ‘New Born’ alongside Hugh Jackman, beginning on 8 May.
