The journey began on February 13, 2025, when Cat went for a routine anatomy scan, eager to learn the sex of her unborn child. However, her excitement quickly turned to despair when she received devastating news: her baby had been diagnosed with a severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This birth defect meant her baby’s diaphragm was not fully formed, allowing abdominal organs to invade the chest cavity and preventing normal lung development. “Nothing can ever prepare you to get a diagnosis like this,” she reflected, recalling the moment her doctor shared the troubling news.
The weeks following the diagnosis were fraught with a mix of emotions for Cat and her husband, Wesley. She described this period as the most challenging of her pregnancy, filled with an overwhelming sense of grief even while her daughter, named June, was still safely inside her. During this extended hospitalisation, baby June faced critical health challenges, including the need for multiple surgeries to reposition her internal organs and ongoing management for pulmonary hypertension. Cat shared the agony of waiting nearly three weeks before she could hold her daughter for the first time, a moment she described as “the most anticipated” of her entire life. “No words can ever describe how powerful that moment was to get to hold my baby in my arms,” she recounted, fighting back tears as she embraced her daughter.
As the weeks progressed, June began to recover and make remarkable strides, astonishing her medical team with her progress. When the day of her discharge finally arrived in September, Cat felt an overwhelming rush of emotion. The hospital arranged a small graduation ceremony for the family, complete with a celebratory poster and a special carriage for their departure. Cat reflected, “Walking through the door to our home as a family of three was the beginning of a new chapter.”
