Country music artist Dasha is candidly reflecting on the challenges of sudden fame following her breakout single “Austin,” a track that resonated with listeners and went viral on TikTok. During a recent appearance on “Taste of Country Nights,” the 26-year-old revealed that despite the overwhelming success of her music, she found herself struggling with a sense of disconnection from her own identity.

Dasha’s single “Austin” marked a significant milestone in her career, becoming her first charting song on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 18. The track achieved an extraordinary milestone in November 2023 when it surpassed one billion streams on Spotify, making it only the second solo female country song to do so. However, this meteoric rise was accompanied by immense pressure and life changes that Dasha was not fully prepared for.

Reflecting on the impact of her newfound fame, Dasha described herself as being in a “messy” state during the height of “Austin’s” success. “I was not doing hot,” she explained, noting that although her dreams were coming true, she felt overwhelmed and disconnected from her former self. “I didn’t account for how much I would lose myself, not giving myself enough time to just be normal and do normal things,” she added.

The artist, whose full name is Anna Dasha Novotny, expressed that she rarely had time to be at home, and as a result, struggled to adapt to the celebrity lifestyle. “It just wrecked me,” she reflected. “I didn’t recognise my personality or my sense of humour.” The pressures of fame made it difficult for her to find the joy in her life that she once had. “I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to wear. I just lost that centre north star that I’ve always had with myself. It was really scary.”
The turning point for Dasha came during a writing session for her emotional song “Oh, Anna!” The session involved collaborators Chris LaCorte, Emily Weisband, and Hillary Lindsey, who had come together with the intention of crafting an upbeat party anthem. However, the session took an unexpected turn when Dasha found herself overwhelmed with emotion. “I broke down. I cried the entire session,” she recounted. In that moment, she realised how desperately she missed her authentic self.
Writing “Oh, Anna!” became a transformative experience for Dasha. She described the process as an opportunity to reconnect with her childhood self. “I can get her back,” she reflected, expressing her determination to channel the happiness she felt as a young girl. The powerful lyrics of the song convey her vulnerability, with poignant lines that express a longing to reclaim her former self.
Released in July, “Oh, Anna!” is hailed as one of Dasha’s most personal songs. The accompanying music video features nostalgic home video footage of her childhood, enhancing the emotional weight of the track. The lyrics invoke a sense of yearning, with messages such as, “I feel more like a scared little kid than I ever did back then.”
While “Austin” catapulted Dasha into the spotlight, her journey serves as a reminder of the complexities that often accompany rapid fame. Performing at prominent events, including the CMT Music Awards and the Grand Ole Opry, Dasha expressed astonishment at the scale of her achievement. “It feels like I’m being pranked sometimes because this is my first hit song,” she said. Recognising the rarity of such success, she remarked, “This is my first moment, and I acknowledge how insane this is.”
As Dasha continues to navigate her career, she remains committed to reconnecting with her authentic self through her music. Her latest work underscores the importance of introspection and emotional honesty in the often chaotic world of fame. As she moves forward, fans can look forward to her ongoing evolution as an artist and an individual, rooted in her rich experiences and heartfelt songwriting.
