According to a preliminary report from the Kauaʻi Police Department (KPD), the helicopter was operating under Airborne Aviation and had a pilot along with four passengers aboard at the time of the accident. Emergency services were alerted following a text-to-911 message received by Kauaʻi Police Dispatch, informing them of the crash.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that the helicopter went down roughly 300 feet from shore. Authorities quickly launched a coordinated response effort that involved multiple agencies, including the Kauaʻi Fire Department, the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency, American Medical Response, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the Kauaʻi Police Department.

While the precise cause of the crash has yet to be determined, the aftermath brought immediate rescue efforts. Two survivors from the accident were transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue for treatment, as confirmed by police officials. The conditions of the survivors remain unclear.
Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami commented on the location of the crash during a segment aired by KHON2 News, stating that it is an “isolated” area that is “very tricky” to access. He expressed gratitude to the first responders for their diligent efforts in managing the challenging rescue operation.
The Nā Pali Coast is a popular destination for tourists due to its stunning cliffs, waterfalls, and remote beaches. Many visitors choose helicopter tours to appreciate the area’s unique beauty, although this tragic event has raised concerns over safety procedures. The rugged terrain of the region makes it less accessible by foot or boat, increasing the allure and risk of air tours.

KPD have stated that further information regarding the incident will be provided as it becomes available, underscoring the active investigation taking place in coordination with the relevant authorities.
As the community and families of those affected begin to process the tragedy, thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The Kauaʻi Police Department, Airborne Aviation, and the U.S. Coast Guard have been approached for additional comment, although responses have not yet been received.
With tourism remaining a vital part of Kauaʻi’s economy, this incident underscores the importance of safety regulations and protocols in the aviation sector. The local community anxiously awaits further updates on this developing situation while the investigation into the crash and its causes continues.
