A tragic fire incident in the Bronx has resulted in the death of one person and left four firefighters injured. The blaze erupted early on the morning of March 26 at a five-storey apartment block located at 505 East 184th Street. Over 280 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the emergency, highlighting the severity of the situation and the difficulties faced in tackling the inferno.

The first responders received the call shortly after 5:30 a.m. local time, with fire crews arriving on site just four minutes later. Kevin Woods, the New York City Fire Department’s (FDNY) chief of operations, stated that firefighters encountered “heavy fire” in the cockloft, a challenging area situated between the top floor’s ceiling and the roof. The location complicated their firefighting efforts as they had to rely on both hand lines and streams from tower ladders to bring the flames under control.
Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighters, one individual tragically lost their life in the apartment where the fire originated. Four firefighters sustained minor injuries, including heat exhaustion and sprains. The damage to the building was extensive, with reports indicating that the roof collapsed into the top floor, rendering the structure unsafe for residents.
In a show of support, Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited the scene and expressed his gratitude for the first responders’ actions. He acknowledged the emotional toll on residents, many of whom were displaced from their homes. “Many people are losing much of what they know as their home, and that is an incredibly difficult experience to go through,” he remarked to reporters. The city is now mobilising resources to assist those affected.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as indicated by the FDNY, which typically refrains from issuing specifics about victims until further details emerge. Resident Shanae Brown recounted her ordeal, explaining that she was alerted to the fire by a neighbour shortly before 4 a.m. She managed to escape with her husband and their dog. While outside, she heard desperate screams for help, which she believes came from the victim trapped inside.
Brown recalled a heartbreaking exchange: “He recognized my voice, which was very heartbreaking. He said, straight up: ‘Nae, I cannot move. I’m stuck. I’m trapped.’” Shortly after their conversation, she heard silence, indicating the tragic outcome of the situation.
The inferno affected more than 50 residents who were forced to abandon their homes and belongings. Terrell Dixon and Marissa Brown were among the evacuees, and as they fled with their two children and pets, Marissa sustained burns from hot tar. This incident raises significant concerns regarding the safety of the building, as many residents had previously reported issues. In fact, a violation was issued in 2021 for deteriorating conditions on the roof.
In light of the troubling patterns of neglect, Marissa expressed her anger, stating, “I’m p****d; somebody’s got to be held responsible.” It is clear that the fire has not only deprived many of their homes but has also ignited a demand for accountability regarding the living conditions that have long been a cause for concern.
