In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, actress Zazie Beetz discussed the challenging aspects of filming her first lead role in the new horror film, “They Will Kill You.” Directed by Kirill Sokolov, the movie presents a gripping storyline where Beetz’s character, Asia Reaves, battles for survival against a satanic cult within the confines of a hotel in New York City.

Beetz, who is well known for her roles in television series such as “Atlanta,” candidly revealed that the toughest part of the shoot wasn’t the intense action sequences or fake blood, but rather the relentless rain scenes. Speaking about the experience, she said, “I would actually say the most difficult stuff was the rain scenes, which I wasn’t expecting.” Filmed during the frigid winter months in Cape Town, South Africa, these scenes involved shooting in extremely cold conditions for extended periods — up to twelve hours overnight.
Despite the film employing fake rain, the water was icy cold as warm water would cause unwanted steam on camera. Beetz explained, “They have to use cold water because there’s rain machines and because warm water steams in the camera.” Enduring these conditions was a physically taxing and mentally demanding a challenge for her. “You’re cold. There’s nothing,” she said, summing up her discomfort during the numerous night shoots.
The extended rain sequences tested Beetz’s resolve, not only physically but also emotionally. She noted that she had to reach into her core for motivation, reminding herself of the importance of being present in the moment. She stated, “In some ways when you’re stripped raw, you can just be like, ‘All right, I’m just in my primal self.’”
Her co-star, Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette, expressed admiration for Beetz’s stamina, highlighting the demanding nature of the filming process. Arquette described it as a “constant marathon,” noting the long hours and multiple takes required for each intense scene, which often involved high-paced action. “It’s breakneck speed nonstop from beginning to end,” Arquette remarked, reflecting on how Beetz had to perform extensive running sequences multiple times.
To cope with the rigour of the shoot, Beetz engaged in a self-care routine that included taking naps and seeking solitude. She found that decompressing alone was necessary to recuperate from the intense filming. “I need my quiet time. I nap a lot,” she commented, emphasizing the importance of rest amid the chaos of production.
Both Beetz and Arquette agreed that despite the challenges, the set was filled with energy and excitement. Arquette praised the blend of martial arts, comedy, gore, and horror in the script, which kept everyone invigorated. “It was a fun project,” she said, “and I think that has its own energy that was very exciting to be on set.”
Looking back, Beetz expressed how the experience shaped her as an actress, particularly as she anticipated sharing her journey during the film’s promotional tour. “I just kept thinking to this moment, that one day I’m gonna be sitting next to Patricia and we’re gonna talk about it and be all happy,” she reflected. “And here we are, so I manifested to this exact moment right here.”
